Question about LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

No external drive icon on desk top

There is power to my Lacie external drive but the icon which was on the desk top is no longer there. Did shut-down, disconnected and reconnected all cords including power cords, checked disk utility, no icon showing.

I have the same problem with 500GB d2. I called Lacie support  and they told me that I can expect no more than 2 years of use in these hard drive (funny that they don't mention that on the box...). They told me to change the power supply but nothing. I even went to the extreme  open an other 500GB and exchanges the hard drives and still nothing. I lost 500GB of important information and there is nothing that I (or Lacie) can do...
I find out that Lacie only makes the box to hold the hard drives. They use cheap (or whatever is available and put all together a external hard drive unit). You may be lucky to buy one with good parts but you may be like me and get one that will die after over a year. I have six 500GB Lacie D2 and one 1TB. I am backing up all the informations to DVDs and never by Lacie products ever again.

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

traditional hard drives are sensitive devices and it is normal for them to fail even after such a shock. It is even recommended to not move a hard drive while it is spinning.

If you do not need the data on this drive, replacing the internal hard drive and then formatting with your operating system is all that you have to do.

If you need the data, you will need to bring the drive to a data recovery center, There is nothing you can try at home without taking the risk of negating any possible chance of recovering the data.

No matter the brand and type of storage device, it is recommended to always have a copy of important data on a different media.

Go for it. There's a chance the internal drive will be PATA (IDE) but odds are good it's a SATA drive with standard connections.

Make sure your PC has connections for SATA drives, and you'll need to buy a SATA cable since the one in the LaCIE case won't connect from your drive to your motherboard.

Try this again, shut everything down and take out all power cables.

Leave for a minute.

Put all the power cables back in and power everything back up, Mac first then the Lacie.

If this doesn't work, try going to disk utilities with the drive plugged in and see if the drive icon if displayed on the left. If it is you should be able to highlight it and click "mount"

Lacie sounds like its working , but i can't find the icon on computer

Your hard dive is probably not formatted. You can check if your external hard drive is detected by the BIOS during bootup. You can also check this by Right click on taskbar > properties > startmenu > customize > advanced > scroll down completely and select system administration tools "Display on the all programs menu" > ok. Click on start > all programs > administrative tools > computer management > double click on storage. click on disk management(local) here you should see your lacie. If you dont then the drive is probably not detected. If you see, you can just partition it from here and it will appear in your my computer.

It sounds as if the enclosure has failed. IF THE DRIVE IS GETTING POWER, but not making strange noises, you may just need to extract the drive from the enclosure. Keep your fingers crossed. If the drive has been affected, data recovery may be the solution. Good luck.
