Question about PC Desktops

Just bought a 50 pk memorex CD-r. My system says the device is not ready, on both G: and H: drives. Also have gotten message "CD with unrecognizable data", and remember this is a brand new disk. Didn't think that it needed to be formated, but tried that. Still stuck!!!!

I once bought a pack of Comp USA CDs at Goodwill for about $3.00. Package was sealed, brand new. About half of them were good and if I remember the others gave the same message that you are getting. So defective stuff does get out. I could actually see the defect in the bad discs.

My pc wont boot. All i get is " reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

This can happen if you have non-bootable media in the default boot device (i.e., you have a CD in the CD/DVD drive and that drive is listed as the default boot device in your system's BIOS). More often (on newer systems), a failed hard drive will also produce this message.

If you have bootable media (the Windows install CD is one example), you should try to boot to it and see if you can read your hard drive.

I would like to dissable my cdrom from opening when using edject button. This way someone could not remove the cd

You can not configure your drive to do that. What you could do is disable the device entirely to do this open Control Pane select System click HARDWARE and open DEVICE MANAGER find your CD ROM right click and select Disable This Device.
If you do this you can Enable The Device the same way you Disabled it.

Take a can of air and blow some into the drive. This will make sure that no dust or dirt is interfering on the laser.

If after you do this the drive is still acting up, then that means the drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

Need to find out how to install my memorex double layer 16x

Ok here is what you need to do. Open the box that the driver came in and also the side panel of your computer. Remove the cables that are attached to the current CD-ROM drive and if you need to unscrew the screws that are holding the CD-ROM drive in place which you'll need a phillips screw driver for. Remove the old CD-ROM and put in the new one and reconnect the cables to the new one. If an installation disk came with it then put that in the CD-ROM drive and install whatever is on that disk. Afterwards you should be ready to go. If you need anything else please let me know!

Windows 98SE. Floppy & CD drives not working.

Possibly an IDE problem on the motherboard. Open up the PC and check the leads havent come out, there are 2 - a ribbon cable and a power lead. It could be the power supply is faulty. This is unlikely Windows more likely hardware. Does BIOS detect the drives as it loads?

I purchased a pack of Memorex CD-R rrecordable 52X 700MB 80 min. discs from Staples and I was told I could use these to transfer pictures from my drive c. When I put the CD in to the drive D it asks me to...

Cd-R does not need formatting. They are ready to burn. There is probably a problem with your cdr drive.

A cd-rom drive is not a burner.

Are you sure you have a burner and not a cd-rom?

If you do have a burner, try another few disks. If it still says insert disk then your burner has crapped out.

if you have made a bad burn the first time you can't use the cd again.

because you have bought cd-r. if you buy cd-rw you can burn over and over one the same disk.
