Either there is a problema with the centrifugal switch moving to the run position or the run windings are shot.

Dryer start button

The motor switch is not switching over. Either the switch is bad or the dryer is not tumbling fast enough to activate it. Eric

Dryer only runs when "push to start" lever is held. stops when you let go. is this the motor switch causing this?

In a normal situation, when you push the start button, it activates the relay to hold on the circuit until it is interupted: for example you open the door. The relay cannot activate by itself until an initiation by the push button. If the relay is not working to hold the current then then holding the button to keep motor running is what happenes here. Your relay need to be replaced.

Press start button and dryshuts off when start button is released

There is a switch assembly on the motor that activates when the motor is running. Centrifugal switch. It keeps it running when you release the switch. That is where to start. Eric

Dryer starts when start button is pressed and held but will not stay running when button is released

there is a holding contact at the motor wiring, check the schematics and trace that holding contact. it should hold the motor running as soon as it starts.
