The trigger voltage of the 45CL4 is right on the borderline, according to this list. Personally I wouldn't use this flash on a digital camera without something like a Wein Safe-Sync to isolate the two devices.

Try to keep the Flash setting on ISO-setting of 100 constant and adjust your aperture setting on the flash..Do not try to sync with the camera settings..it will normally work...for example.if your camera setting is as this: ISO-400, shutter speed is 125 and aperture is F8, then keep the flash setting as i mentioned above.this setting in an evening environment in a hotel or party event. this may help...

SOURCE: which adapter do Ineed to connect my nikon d90

What do you mean by adaptor?! You will need to by a hotshoe adaptor with a hole that talkes the old style cable plug from your Metz lead and away you go! Try jessops. (As long as you have the lead from your Metz!?

If the shoe of the flash is compatible with the hot shoe of the camera then yes go for it. Should the flash shoe be different then the flash will still work but with a shoe adapter. Both are TTL so I see no reasons why they won't work. I do know of a friend who uses the Nikon with the same flash but it has the battery pack fitting and uses an adapter on the camera's hot shoe. He does weddings galore and never had a problem even though he carries a spare he has never used it.

SOURCE: How can I use Metz

First you need a hotshoe adapter to connect flash Sync cable to camera. You have to pay your attention about the following settings. Set the same ISO speed on flash gun and camera.( 100 or 200) White balance to Auto or Flash on camera. Mode dial to M (manual) and shutter speed to 1/200 or slower on camera. Aperture setting to 5.6 or 8 (both on camera and on flash) Now take some trial photos and check on the LCD display and histogram and do fine tuning to your exposure. Change the aperture value on camera to control the exposure of flash as well as the ambient light Change the shutter speed to control the exposure of ambient light. (!/200 or slower speed) I hope you got the solution to your problem. I also have the same set of equipments to do my photography.
