When the dryer runs even with nothing in it it , makes a thumping

check the inside of the drumm make sure none of the fins are loose,
but sounds more like the wheel rollers are bad, sometimes is loud when it starts then seems to go away a little after the dyer get hotter, is the heat that makes the metal bearings make less noise. u can replace the wheels, the belt an tensioner at the same time is cheaper to pruchase the kit an have it all done the first time! bad wheels put more stress on belt an eventually will break apart so just order the entire kit

My Maytag LSG7800AAW makes a loud noise at start up that sounds like sneakers in the dryer, but there are no sneaker in the dryer. Could it be the rollers or belts?

Probably the rollers have failed and is causing the felt to misalign the drum. The front skid plates are also a possibility. Before you take this apart make sure your local supplier has the parts you need to put it back together. If you are going to order online the cheaper parts are the felt and skid pats and most likely the problem causers

that gap in the drum is most likly hitting a roller in the back of dryer so my best guess is replace drum if you feel it's not that change the felt around door thank you for useing fixya rate me

Noisy drum

You may have a rear drum support issue. There are 2 rollers,(supports), 1 at 4 o'clock and 1 at 7 o'clock. If the bushing in the roller becomes elongated,(elliptical), it will give a thumping noise, as you describe.
