Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Installing a linksys router with a u-verse RG.

I can't seem to install my linksys router with my u-verse RG. The router installation cd makes it seem simple by just plugging in the wires from the ethernet to the router and a cable from the router back into the LAN on the RG but nothing happens. The model number on the router is a WRT54G2. From the web, I've surmised I have to change settings on the RG and possibly the router. I guess I need step by step directions, I just don't want to screw up the whole u-verse setup.

Hi sgolob48,

First, make sure that the wireless network capability ofthe U-Verse RG is diabled (since you're using the Linksys for that purpose).

Second, make sure the ethernet cabel from the back of the RG connects to an LAN port on the Linksys (NOT the Linksys's WAN port).

Finally, disable the DHCP feature on the Linksys (since DHCP should be active on the U-VerseRG). Here's how:
1) Install the Linksys software on your computer and open your internet browser.
2) Type the URL 192.168.1.1 (default for Linksys access ponts).
3) You'll be asked to enter a username and password. The default is username "admin" and password either "admin" or [blank].
4) Once you've logged in, scroll down on the basic settings page (the one that loads automatically) to where it says Network Address Server Settings (DHCP). Click the radio button next to Disable, then click Save Settings at the bottom.

What you've basically done is make the Linksys another computer in your network, and the one that others will connect to the RG through.

I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,
H2H

Hi. Just bought a WRT120N. My problem is I do not have a cd rom on my pc. what must i do to install this without the cd? Thank you.

Hi there,

You can go to the Linksys website at http://www.linksys.com and install the Drivers from there. The drivers on the DVD are probably outdated anyways so installing from the website assures you're getting the latest drivers.

I have a broadband router with SRX400 and im trying to install it on my laptop and i cant. i need help installing it. i have the disk but it keeps telling me it cant connect

Do you have CD? Start>Control panel>Add Remove and uninstall it. Restart computer. You have to use the "lan" cord with the cd to install it. Reset your cable or phone modem by the back reset switch. Install cd and follow the directions that cam with it in exact order or you have to remove it again. Do not hook it up to your internet modem until instructed to do so. Linksys does have a 1-800-326-7114 customer support line to help but if you do call them make sure you have it completely uninstalled.

After installing cd the window that pops up has no tabs to click

You do not need to install the CD that comes with the router. After plugging in the router, simply connect to the wireless network by clicking Start>Connect To. Click Linksys. Click Connect

Router not connecting

The problem here is that the WRT54GS is an old model, so naturally the installation CD is also old. This is especially a problem if you are running Vista. I ran into the same problem when I was installing my wireless card; my computer would detect it on boot up, but when I installed the drivers from the CD, it said the card wasn't plugged in.

The solution would be to download the lastest installation and driver files from the LinkSys website and use those instead of the installation CD that came with it. You may have to hunt for it, as some companies would rather push new products than update older ones, but since the router is still on the market, they should have the updated drivers and installation files.

Wireless printing with AT&T U-verse and 3800 HGV-B and Linksys WPSM54G

I may not be able to completely solve the issue for all who posted, and I have not gotten the scanner part of my Brother MFC-5440CN printer/scanner/copier/fax to work through the wireless PS, but I can at least shed some light:

First off - trying to make the Linksys WPS54G work on a wireless network that has a decent level of security is NOT for the faint of heart!

Key issue is security; make sure you know what wireless security protocol your router is using (WEP-64, WEP-128, or WPA). My U-verse installation uses the exact same 2Wire router, but either it defaults to WPA security, or the tech set it up that way without asking me. WPA is preferable anyway, as it is the most secure, and I had my network set up on WPA with my ZOOM X6 when we had AT&T DSL.

The problem is that the Linksys unit is old/obsolete enough that it defaults to WEP or no security, and in fact the setup program and utilities on the CD that came with the refurb. unit I recently bought are way outdated compared to the current downloads available on their support site, and don't even offer WPA as an option.

If your U-verse router is configured for WPA, as is most likely, then you have to get your Linksys unit configured for WPA security before it can be properly "seen" on the network by your computers. This means either downloading the latest setup/driver programs from Linksys's support website and burning a fresh setup CD, or getting to the Web-interface of the unit and setting it there (I could not even get to the web-interface because of my firewall and other security). Only then can you set the unit to use WPA security with the same key/passphrase as your U-verse router and your computer(s).

I'd advise downloading the latest stuff in any case. I ended up downloading the latest firmware, upgrading it on the unit using the Bi-Admin util on the setup CD, setting up the unit using the web-interface (be patient, because sometimes the page loads can be very slow when it is reading or writing settings). I have never been able to access the web-interface from my laptop, which is probably the most secure on our network. I was only able to get things working when I accessed it from an old PC we rarely use, and it is only running Windoze (XP) Firewall for security. The print server had to be Ethernet connected to the router while doing the configuration to make it work.

Installing linksys wrt54g

Hi,

The quickest/easiest is to boot your PC attached to the modem through an Ethernet cable without the WRT54G. Pop in the CD installer and allow the installer program to run. Closely follow on screen instructions. At some point you would be asked to reboot and connect the LinkSys using another Ethernet cable. Once rebooted, the program will auto configure the router and you should be be able to use it. Of course the PC must be set to "Auto Obtain IP Address".

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Still didn't work

did you install the driver? you also have to be sure that you installed a vista driver....if your cd-driver for linksys does not work download the vista driver from teh linksys website. i also suggest if you can't install the vista driver for your linksys properly i suggest you copy the driver to a cd and install it from there( meaning install the router using the cd). I also suggest you uninstall it from the control panel- add/remove programs before installing the new driver. also try installing the driver or linksys w/ your firewall off it also has to be configured to allow the program
