Question about Philips ML469501 46 in. Rear Projection Television

Open Question

Control knob R469 on "A" board does not work for width

Philips Magnavox Model PN 2046 P103 / Chassis Model PTV-410-AH01 Made in 1993. I recently changed the optical Fluid in the Lenses and what great color!!! Even before that I had a problem with the width control on The "A" Board. When I go to Converge The R469 width control knob does not work, making it impossible to get the convergence correct. How can I fix this? Is it just the width control or is there another diode or something wrong. if it is just the knob where can I get one and can I just resolder one onto the board???? Thanks so much....Joe

SOURCE: 51 magnavox projection tv-color mixing wrong

The are controls on the inside of the tv above the circuit boards for focus and to turn up intensity of the projector lamps (red, green, and blu). If you turn it up too far all three projector lamps kick off. If this happens, power off the set and turn down the lamp that you turned up. Power it back on and slowly turn the projector lamp up until the picture looks OK. You have to take off the panel on back of set to get to the controls.

Just replace the two STK392-110 Convergence ICs and that will correct the convergence. The small pic if its centerd in the center of the screen is usually caused by the opto-couplers being bad

SOURCE: Red CRT board not working. Blue seems to be going also.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Let's check and see if we can find the correct board with the problem. A good place to start is to disconnect the jumper jack 1516 [TV unplugged first]. Now plug in the TV, and power the TV on. If the tubes light up and shut down...then the small signal module is at fault. {this contains convergence ICs} Or it could possibly be the ssb [small signal board] is bad. Leave the set unplugged for a few days and plug in and power up this TV..It may work for a few seconds and go down again. These are two good places to start before you pull the boards out...and they are not easy!

NO PICTURE ON MY TV BUT I DO HAVE SOUND.

Check all your cables, make sure CRT boards are tight. Make sure you put the black ground wires back on the tubes. Also make sure that no fluid has spilled on the circuit boards.

Audio amps in a Philips PTV is one of the easiest sets to repair. To my knowledge all the individual parts are still available so I see no need to replace the entire amp. know what problem you have first, then we'll try and determine what you may or may not need? They had a board which is called the SSB ( small signal board ) that used to go bad creating similar symptoms like that. That board is the size of a 3x5 photo and stands up on the left side of the chassis, anyway let me know?

Power light comes on and goes right off

Take a look at the blue round capacitors. They stand on end and about the size of a dime and 1/8" thick. They should be by the highvoltage transformer. That's the plastic box with a spark-plug wire sticking out the top. The circuit board should have numbers printed by the parts. Look for c811 or C8** . The C means capacitor and the 800 numbers means the circuit it's in. This is a horizontal output capacitor your looking for. You will see it burnt. Might not be blue...could be yellow or orange. But you should know what kind of capacitor to look for by the description I gave. This seemed to be a problem with these sets....or atleast one problem of MANY. If it's not that, then you need big time service. I wouldn't waste your money on a Magnavox. They just don't hold-up to repairs very well. If you find the burnt part, let me know what the location is...C8**....and I'll tell you what the value is. You won't beable to read it if it's burnt. Now atleast you know what your looking at. Sometimes if you have someone turn the set on while you look at the board in a dark room, it will spark. Hope that helps. Good-luck.

What was the model number of the set that has the 7 pin keypad that you are needing the info on? Can you change out the front screen panels so you can use the origional controls for your chassis. If they are both 60 inch you may be able to switch out the front screen and control trims.

You will probably need the service manual for both chassis to straighten that out. I am posting a link where you can purchase one manual that covers the entire series for magnavox PTV 836-PTV 835 it has 2,440 pages. It cost 19.99 and they will email it to you and provide you with free unlimited support that goes with the manual purchase. here is the link if interested in getting the service manual.
