Either your hard drive is defective, formatted wrong, or improperly partitioned. Most likely it will need to be reformated, and I recommend the default partition size unless it is signifigantly (more than 10%) less than your actual drive size. 500GB drives are available for less than $100, and much more viable than the smaller drives.

You will need to perform a repair install using a Windows CD. The current configuration on the hard drive was basically with an entirely different computer and thus, it does not know how to "talk" to the new hardware. The repair install should fix that and create a new Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that will enable Windows to "talk" to the new hardware.

Im trying to upgrade my hard drive from a 40g to a 160 but it only shows up as 40gb

You probably used software to "clone" the "old" disk-drive to the "new" disk-drive. So, the "new" drive is an *EXACT* image of the 40GB drive.

Click Start
Point to My Computer
Click with the SECOND (usually the RIGHT) mouse-button.
Click Manage
Double-click Storage
Double-click Disk Management (local)
You'll see that the "last" 120GB on the new disk are "unallocated".

Use that "disk-cloning" software to "resize" the 40GB partition on the new disk-drive, to integrate that "unallocated" space into the current partition.

Or, right-mouse click on that "unallocated" space, and create a partition within that space, and to "format" that space, and to assign a drive-letter (E: ? F: ?) to that 120GB of disk-space.

Have maxtor 40gb hd want to add 2nd WD hd in DEll dim8200

(if both drives on the same cable):
Your boot drive goes at the end of the primary data cable.
Your second drive goes on the middle connection of the same cable.
The red stripe on the data cable needs to be closest to the power connection (red stripe to pin 1).
The jumper on the boot drive set to master.
The jumper on the second drive set to slave.
Look in the BIOS to make sure it sees both harddrives.
Boot the system.. it will need to be partitioned and formatted if not already..
Regards..

Help me with I replaced the 40G HD (still working) with a working 80G HD from another Windows PC. It won't boot. Bios recognizes the drive. I get a black screen and blinking cursor. What am I missing?

Windows loads specific drivers for the computer it was loaded on. If the new computer is not the same you will have to either load the drivers or reload Windows on the computer.

Replacing with harddrive 40GB

Did you simply swap hard drives? "Couldn't find NTLDR" basically means the PC cannot find any version of Windows installed because the boot file is missing. This could be because you have a CD in the drive or the hard drive is missing or broken.

If you put in a new hard drive to replace your older smaller one you need to reinstall Windows on that new 40GB drive or it just won't work. If you have some PC Tech friends they should be able to move the data which is tricky or help you out.

80gb harddrive that only says it has 34gb

Using a program like Parition Magic would allow you to adjust the partition size of your current partitions. It is possible that Compaq has used some ot the hard drive space for its recovery and restoration software. You could combine the current partitions into one larger partition. It is also possible that another partition exists using a Linux or other non windows operating system.

If you take a hard drive for one computer to another the windows wil have to be reinstalled as windows looks at the hardware configuation and if it doesn not match, will not run. If the 20 gb hard is working , reinstall it then using backup software back it up to another hard drive. That will work. Personally I use" Acronis true home" software to change a hard drive but their  are other  wil also work. Some  backup and transfer softwware even come with the replacment hard drives.

Hard Drive

Yes this hard drive should work with your system. all you should take into consideration is whether the inputs and such are the same and if all the other components in your system will support the newly added part.
