Question about Brother SX-4000 Typewriter
The problem is, regardless of which mode of operation it is in ( i.e., Auto, line-by-line, or off), at times the machine will not strike the pin wheel and lose it's pin wheel location, making a clicking noise, but the carrier advances as if it has typed. If set on line-by-line and it begins to malfunction as stated above, or if the hammer begins to strike after it has began to malfunction, most of the time the pin wheel will be out of whack and you get the wrong letters. To fix it, sometimes the reset will work and other times the machine will have to be shut off and restarted. I have taken the wheel out and checked for bent areas and dirt but found nothing.
If you cleaned the printwheel home sensor and found no obstructions, I would first try a different wheel before going any further, sometimes they become damaged.

If you are asking how to download to a computer file or a
storage device, there is not a way without a major modification to your
hardware (commonly known as a HACK to the device). Brother did not include a
way to download from memory to a computer file.On the other hand, if you want to print what you have on the
LCD screen you are typing in display mode. There are 2 typed of display modes
(Line by line, and Auto) The way to print in display mode is;
To determine what mode you are in, on the right side of the display you will see the operate section (see attached diagram) . If the triangle is pointing up you are in "Auto Return", if it is pointing down you are in "Line by Line" mode. If you don't see a triangle it should type as a normal typewriter (each letter as soon as you type it). To toggle through the modes hold the ALT key and press the OPERATE key. The keys that are activated by the ALT are color coded (same color as the ALT key) and are across the top of the keyboard.
