Volvo 850 failed MOT on emissions

The car has done 170000 miles but still drives and pulls very well, the engine sometimes smokes which smells like burning oil, but it does not burn any oil, the engine warning light is on, but has been since the last MOT. I have fitted a new lambda sensor but it still smokes, the head gasket is only 20000 miles old. I have used cataclean through the engine which got it through the emissions last year.
Have done the same this time but reading is co10.24 which as you know is very high.
Please help?

It sounds like the catalytic converter is bad.

Volvo 850 smoke coming from exhaust manifold

Not to worry. Run the engine up to operating temp before jumping to conclusions and let the heat burn off any excess oil. A leaf will not do any damage.Do not let the engine overheat while idling and if the oil light comes on switch off immediately.
The smoke from the exhaust is oil deposited by oily assembly hands just burning off. It should dissipate after about 15 minutes at most.(or 5 miles' drive)

I wrote in yesterday about my 1995 Volvo 850 (approx 160,000 miles) with leaking valves that will required about $1200 more in work. I appreciate the good responses I've received. One more question:...

yes I do believe you can easily get 200k out of her. I have seen a few volvo's with over 250k on them. As long as maintenance is kept up, she'll keep purring

Engine light on, heavy smoke and engine burning smell (Audi 1.8T)

First off, how the Hell did they issue a DOT Cetificate, if the Emissions are known to be off the clock. Without causing stress, do you have, or can obtain the Emission Test Result Print Out from the Testing Station test Equipment. This is something they cannot refuse. DO NOT AUTHORISE ANY REPAIRS Come back TO ME with your story.

Audi 1.8T sport Auto (2001) heavy smoke and engine buring smell

The engine could be shot, oil is being burnt off by the actions of being sucked into the bores via worn piston rings then ejected out of the exhaust

If you sent the car in for an MOT and a Service I would ask the garage what they did to it as the car would have failed on its emissions test if that much oil was coming out .

It could have been a fault on the oil pump or lack of oil in the first instance and maybe an overfill on the service

You paid your money now go back for redress

Hi, I have a 1996 Volvo wagon 850 turbo. I just bought it and when you hold the rpm's at 3 and a half it was blowing out smoke after about 600 miles it stoped smelling like burning oil and doesn't blow out any smoke. But I use a court of oil in about every 150 miles. What could this be?

Volvo 850 t5 emission warning light on (green triangle)

it is probally due to an evap -code and never refuel with engine running go to a parts store and get the code and erase code and go to have car inspected right away and put a bottle of emission reducer in tank WITH 1/8 OF FUEL and then put it on machine and you should be ok
