Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am using Norton Antivirus 2005 with windows XP. A couple of days ago my I started having some problems with my ISP (I use Bell Sympatico service). Apparently they were making some changes to their servers. Now my Internet and email is working but I am having some problems. First, there are certain websites that I am not able to access. I get the following message: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage Most likely causes: • You are not connected to the Internet. • The website is encountering problems. • There might be a typing error in the address. What you can try: Diagnose Connection Problems More information When I go to diagnose the connection problems it tells me: “Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for HTTP (port 80), HTTPS (port 443), FTP (port 21).” I have my windows firewall turned off so I no it isn’t a problem with that one. I have tried to run my Norton Antivirus and I get the following message: Norton Antivirus Scanner Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous. To see what data this error report contains , click here Have also seen the same message but with a Symantec Integrator

When I click on the LAN settings as described none of those options are selected (ie. both automatic configuration and proxy server have nothing selected).

I believe it is Internet explorer 7 (but I am not positive- I am not sure how to check for this).

When I copy and pasted it took me to the google website.

I always thought I was running Norton antivirus (since 2005- and have regularly run live updates and updated my virus protection yearly). However, the icon for this does say Norton Internet Security..and when I try to access it I get that first message I put on :

"Symantec Integrator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what data this error report contains , click here"

When I do click on it, it gives me the following error signature:

    AppName: nmain.exe AppVer: 103.0.2.10 ModName:ascompbr.dll ModVer: 2005.1.2.6 Offset: 00009179

It also gives the option to view the technical information about the error report. When I click on this it lists a large number of nodules and numbers, threads, and stack numbers. I have sent this error report off to Norton several times but not sure if it is doing anything.

The only other Firewall I have is the Windows Firewall but I have this turned off. The only other virus/spyware I run is spybot.

Thank you again for all your help

Interesting, so you are resolving with pings but you can't browse..your results show dns is resolving correctly to some degree atleast. Lets take a look at Internet Explorer and see if for some reason you have a proxy server set up.

    • Open Internet Explorer
    • Choose Tools
    • Click Internet Options
    • Click Connections
    • Click Lan Settings

Are any of those options populated with data? Are you using IE 5,6,7 or 8?

Just for fun copy this: 72.14.205.103

and paste it into your IE browser and try to get to it.

Do you have Norton Internet Security or just Antivirus? Do you have any other Firewall programs such as Zone Alarm or Komodo? If everything checks out here I am going to have you run a Winsock fix - which I will explain once you post back if required.

  • Chase May 11, 2010

Alright so lets move on. There are plenty of things to look at here but lets go over them one at a time. To start lets check your Network Connections settings to ensure everything is configured properly.

    • Click Start

    • Settings (Or Control Panel if you don't see Settings)

    • Open Network Connections

    • Click View

    • Choose Details

You should see Local Area Conection and unless you have wireless or blue tooth/vpn installed it might be your only connection.

    • Right click on Local Area Connection (Status should say Connected) and choose Properties

    • Locat Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select it

    • Click Properties

Are both the top and bottom selections set as Obtain automatically? If not what's listed?

Before we dive into your IE and system settings, what browser are you using?

Last but not least for this post lets take a look at your event viewer.

    • Click Start

    • Choose Run

    • Enter eventvwr.msc and hit OK

Here is where it gets a little sticky as there are a lot of options from here that could possibly be important. Click on System and notice the date, scan through today and look for anything that is the Type ERROR. Record them and post them back here, do the same for Security and Application. Do them only for today though, no reason for you to go back to far just yet.

  • Chase May 11, 2010

Ok good we clarified you have an IP address from your router, lets see if your machine is able to send a basic response request to an external website.

    • Click Start

    • Run

    • Type in CMD and hit OK

    • In the window type Ping www.google.com

If you have access to the internet you should get a reply and we can continue troubleshooting the machine. If you get no reply we will need to take a glance at your router and verify that its functioning properly.

  • Chase May 11, 2010

Click start, choose run, type in CMD and hit OK. In the window that opens type in IPCONFIG and hit enter. Do any of your Local Area Connections have an IP Address that starts with 169?

Turns out the whole problem was related to my version of Norton (which I have run/updated without problem since 2005) suddenly becoming defective. Once I removed Norton with their remove tool on the Symantec website everything worked fine again. Thanks for your help

Can receive but can't send email

I can receive but can't send mail using my POP mail client. Why? If you're able to receive but unable to send mail using your POP mail client (such as Outlook), please review the possible trouble areas below.
SMTP Server
In the fight against unsolicited commercial email (spam), some Internet service providers require their subscribers to send mail through the ISP's own SMTP servers. If you experience problems sending email, please contact your ISP to determine if it requires different SMTP server settings. You will need to use the ISP's SMTP server in place of Yahoo!'s SMTP server when configuring your POP mail client.
The following is a partial list of ISPs that require you to use their SMTP servers. If your ISP is among them, try replacing the Yahoo! SMTP server with the ISP server in your POP mail client settings, or consult the ISP's help files. (Learn more about configuring your client.) If your ISP does not appear in the list below, please contact your ISP directly for more information.
MSN smtp.email.msn.com NetZero smtp.netzero.net Verizon outgoing.verizon.net Earthlink/MindSpring Please visit its help pages AT&T Please visit its help pages Bell Sympatico Please visit its help pages SBC See below SBC Your SMTP settings will vary based on your account setup. Choose the SMTP setting that corresponds to the email address most like the one provided to you by your ISP.
you@ameritech.net smtp.ameritech.yahoo.com you@flash.net smtp.flash.yahoo.com you@nvbell.net smtp.nvbell.yahoo.com you@pacbell.net smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com you@prodigy.net smtp.prodigy.yahoo.com you@sbcglobal.net smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com you@snet.net smtp.snet.yahoo.com you@swbell.net smtp.swbell.yahoo.com you@wans.net smtp.wans.yahoo.com For more information about AT&T's SMTP requirements, please visit the AT&T help center or contact AT&T DSL support at 877-SBC-DSL5 (877-722-3755) or AT&T DIAL support at 866-SBC-DIAL (866-722-3425).
SMTP Port
If you have adjusted your SMTP server, and you're still experiencing a problem, you may need to use an alternate port. In an attempt to control spam, some Internet service providers now block port 25, which means you may need to use port 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. Learn how to change ports.
Antivirus Protection
If you have Norton AntiVirus enabled on your computer, you may have to make configuration adjustments to use Outlook or Outlook Express. For more information, visit the Symantec web site.
Authentication
The Yahoo! SMTP server requires authentication. Learn more.

To run the Microsoft Windows Installer if Norton AntiVirus was installed from the CD
  1. Insert the Norton AntiVirus CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If the installation program appears, then click Browse the CD
    • If the installation program does not appear, then double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, and then double-click the CD-ROM drive icon.
  3. Double-click the MSI folder.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click the WIN9x folder.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click the WINNT folder.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click the Instmsi.exe file.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click Instmsiw.exe if you have Windows 2000/XP.
  6. In the next dialog box, click Yes.
  7. After the rollback has finished, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus.
Follow the instruction in Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation or after you see error messages to start the computer without any programs running on startup and then reinstall your Norton program.

If these steps do not fix the problem, then go on to the next section.

To run the Microsoft Windows Installer if Norton AntiVirus was installed from a downloaded version
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Find (or Search) > Files or Folders.
  2. Ensure that "Look in" is set to the drive where you downloaded Norton AntiVirus, and that "Include subfolders" is checked.
  3. In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, type the following:

      instmsi.exe
    • In Windows 2000/XP, type the following:

      instmsiw.exe
  4. Click Find Now or Search Now.
You might see many files with this name. Look for the file with this name that is located in either the Symantec_Norton_AntiVirus_2003 or the your Windows temporary file location depending on your version of Norton AntiVirus.
  5. In the Search Results window, do one of the following, depending on your version of Windows:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click Instmsi.exe.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click Instmsiw.exe.
  6. In the next dialog box, click Yes.
This will undo the changes that were made to your system during the first failed installation.
  7. After the process finishes, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus.
Follow the instruction in Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation or after you see error messages to start the computer without any programs running on startup and then reinstall your Norton program.
