The case of the unseen connectors

Hey there,
Just replaced the motherboard on my compaq c712nr notebook and cannot for the life of me find the connections for two of the three wires from the right of the screen--the wires with the round gold-looking connectors on the ends, wires marked '1' and '2' respectively...please advise, and thanks a bunch!

Those are the connections for the wireless network antenna built into the screen. There should be corresponding connectors on the system board where they connect, if the wireless stuff is integrated on the board. On some systems the wireless circuitry is a separate plug-in module, and the connectors would be on that. Are you sure you transferred anything detachable from the old board to the new one?

USB port is physically broken on a Compaq Presario v5000

If you want to replace the broken usb connector you will have to remove the lcd monitor open the casing of your laptop and remove the motherboard and all other devices and heat sinks. Then you will have to desolder the broken connector and solder a new one, which you can buy in almost any electronics store.
Although if you don't have experience with electronics i think the best solution for you would be to buy a "pcimcia usb card"

See if removing the disk produces a response: "No disk or non-system disk, replace and press any key" or something of this sort. That will rule out the hdd failure, alternatively you can try the hdd in an external USB casing to see if it works. Computers with broken/malfunctioning hdds very often hang, bit will come back to life if hdd is disconnected. If the hdd is fine, you most likely will have a memory or a motherboard problem. Removing/replacing or changing position of the memory may help, sometimes they have loose connectors (mind static, earth yourself before touching any of the components of your laptop).

Hey I have an Compaq Evo n610c and the keys quit working is that a motherboard problem or what?

Probably just a loose connection.
Turn computer off,

take screw in middle of bottom of computer out,

turn back over and open computer and slide small bars between the function keys (eg esc and F1, F4 and F5, etc) down.

Tip the computer over and the keyboard should fall out. If it doesn't, gently pull down on a function key and it should come out. If it doesn't, check your work and confirm all 4 of the slide bars are down and the screw is all the way out of the bottom.

There are 2 connectors for the keyboard. One a thin cable and one a wide cable. You problem is the wide cable, for the keyboard. The other is for the trackpoint/touchpad.

You will see a point on the motherboard, close to the bottom of the keyboard where this wide cable connects to the motherboard.

Slide the connector on the motherboard up (there's a small tab on both sides of connector) and the cable will come free. The cable itself is just like a wide piece of ribbon.

Clean off the end with a piece of tissue and slide it into the connector as far as it will go, then push the tabs on the side down to connect the calbe to the motherboard.

Lay the keyboard back down and turn on computer to see if your problem is resolved.

If it is, turn computer back off and reconnect everything.

If it's not fixed, it could be your keyboard has gone bad (buy one on ebay for $25 and install) or you have a motherboard problem (unlikely).

If you search for service manual for a n610 you should be albe to find a PDF file with drawing illustrating the above.

Good luck...

How to open the case of a compaq 1685

Sorry, I don't think you can replaced the socket by your self, it not just because you even don't know to open it, it also need soldering skills and find correct socket can be fit in the case( must same one used for your motherboard.)
Must take whole motherboard out of the case if you want to replaced the power socket. That's not DIY, that's my job.

Compaq Armada E500 PC Notebook usb port problem

If the usb connector / port is only damaged it should be a fairly easy task.

Your going to need a few screwdrivers to get the laptop open
and a soldering iron, to remove the port or ports connector(s)
from the motherboard then replace it with a new connector.
if the motherboard is damaged you would most likely have to replace the whole motherboard and that would be way too much money for a few usb ports.

the usb connector only has 4 pins

Laptop not charging

Unfortunately on most Compaq/HP mobile devices the AC pin is soldered directly onto the motherboard. If the pin is severely bent of broken off then a service is required, usually to replace the motherboard. Having the broken off like then can actually create a minor crack in the PCB. Sorry for the bad news.

Power connector fix

I did have the same problem with my laptop and I fixed it by resoldering the connector. It is not an easy task, mine was a Compaq presario also. If you do decide to do it, you will need to take apart the whole laptop, removing every screw, LCD screen, Keyboard, processor heatsink, motherboard, the whole nine yard.
Don't forget to :
  • remove all the hexagonal screws on each side of the serial/parallel/vga etc... connectors
  • remove the LCD display as soon as you can. that part is actually easy.
  • The keyboard need to come out before you can open the case, there is a few screws under it.
Let me know how it went!
