Hard Drive replacement

I am trying to replace my hard drive with a Hatachi Travelstar5K160, 160gig/5400rpm/8MB for more storage but it will not format. Tried to update my BIOS with ZL53A27.WPH and can not find the program to open this. I can't even find any information about what file extention this is. Can anybody tell me if this notebook can handle this size of hard drive and if so, is a BIOS upgrade necessary to get this to work? Also, if anyone knows a contact e-mail or phone number that works for Acer support please post this so I can give them a piece of my mind. Worst support ever!!

Re: Hard Drive replacement

According to the information I have, you can have a max of 120 gigs of hard drive on this laptop. However, for further information you can contact them here....

Damage hard drive

If you've damaged your laptop's hard drive, there isn't too much you can do about the issue depending on the amount of damage. If it is only crashing, but still operable, you may just have enough time to save some of your information with an external hard drive or other form of data storage. Retrieve your preferred data storage device (an external hard drive would be the best choice in this situation) and try to save as much data from the broken hard drive by copying your data over to a backup folder on your external hard drive. You can find your external hard drive under "My Computer" once it has been plugged in. After you've saved your data, I would suggest buying a new hard drive for your laptop and replacing it carefully. Most laptops can be opened up from the bottom (DON'T undo any screws) and have their hard drives removed, so that you may be able to place in a new one. Be sure that you buy a compatible laptop hard drive, and not a larger hard drive meant for desktop computers.

I have the same problem. I am having a sony vaio vgn-nr120e and my hard drive crashed. Please let me know the exact hdd to replace my sony vaio hdd. I am a novice in computers. I find somethings so...

I've replaced my Sony Vaio VGN_160 with a 120gb Seagate Momentus 7200rpm, 16mb cache 2.5" Sata drive. I would think all notebook SATA drives should be compatible. The 7200rpm drives cost the same as the 5400 and it only uses something like 5% more power. (I read that in a forum so I can really say if it's true.)
I did notice a performance boost from the faster and higher cache drive. It was enough to get my 4 year old Vaio another 12-18 months of life before I get a newer one. And you CAN install Windows 7 (x86 since my Vaio is a core duo and not 64bit compatible.) Yours should be able to take Win7 64, unless of course you like Vista.

Once you remove the stock drive from the drive cage, it's a matter of putting the new drive into the cage and then reinserting.
I would suggest you format the new drive before you replace it. I had the Vaio back together without formatting, and Win7 install DVD was not able to find the drive until I formatted it on my desktop. The Sata and power connector are standard so it was easy to do.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A75-s2762 laptop. I am looking for a compatible hard drive to replace the original one that has failed. I would like the largest hard drive that will successfully work with my...

With that model you need a PATA hard drive. You can go as high as 320gb hd in that laptop. Now the higher the GB the more it costs and well that is up to you. I personally would stick with a 160gb 5400rpm drive for decent size and decent speed.

The hard drive died, can I install Western Digital Scorpio Hard Drive - 120GB - 5400rpm - Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) - IDE/EIDE - Internal (WD1200BEVE) to replace it

You should definitely try out if it fits inside the bay first.
The original drive in the M55-S135 has a height of 8mm and the WD1200BEVE is 9.3mm. This is not a big difference and may pose no problem, but you would like to have all covers close properly later, I assume.
Other than the slightly larger physical dimensions, the drive should be fully compatible with the laptop.

I have the following hard drive HITACHI HTS541040G9SA00 40G sata 5400rpm which is defunct and I want to replace it with a compatible upgrade of 80G? The hard drive is from a Toshiba Equim M70-337 Please...

It's just a 2.5 SATA drive so any drive will more than likely do.....don't lock yourselft ito 80GB when there are 320, 500, etc out there. What is most important is the largest drive your system BIOS will recognize....which most ROMs can be flashed for compatability with newer larger drives.

Check with your Laptop Manufacturer Support Site to see the largest drive supported by your BIOS and if there are any updates.

If you have your hear set on the 80GB Hitachi take a look at the Spec sheet (more like a book)from Hitachi at the link below which provides specs on the 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100GB drives:$file/5K100_SATA_sp1.2.pdf

Replacing a hard drive in a Laptop is probably easier than replacing a light bulb, IMO.

What size drive is in it now? The user manual should tell you what size drive it can use. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is to go back with the same size. The brand does not matter. Is your hard drive IDE or SATA? What is the model of your laptop?
