Brand new mower smoking on first start

I've filled the oil tank with 4 stroke 30 SAE lawnmower oil and half filled the petrol tank>> It starts up fine but it smokes and spits it bits of what I'm guessing is oil from the left side with the smoke as if I've overfilled it with oil, but I've checked the oil 10 times now and its very slightly under the "Full" mark. No idea what to do, i need to get this grass cut desperately and i don't wanna break the thing..

Forgot to say I primed the engine of course, pressed the button about 6 times (this is its first start remember), and it seems to run fine, sounds nice, but the smoke is bothering me even though it smells quite pleasant :) and it got roasting hot in the 20 seconds or so I had it runing for.. I'm just worried something itsn't right..

if you stored it with oil in it at that angle oil will drain from the crankcase threw the rings after some time just run it it should be fine

Tie a rope on the handle and allow it to run for 5-min with no load on it if it doesn't clear up then return it to the store you bought it at

Testimonial: "Well i didn't tie a rope and leave it for 5 mins, but I did start it up a few more times until it went away.. :D Started it up, smokeless then after a f ew seconds it started slowly smoking then getting worse and after about 30secs I shut it off, waited 10mins or so and did it again, after a few tries I just ran over some grass with it and its fine now.. :D Thanks Mike.."

Hmm although I'm not sure I like tha idea, I'm sure you're right... And I think I know why this is happening now.. i didn't realise before but after putting the first bit of oil in I had to store it in the shed and I had to tip the mower forward about 45 degrees to make it fit (but now I've moved things around so I don't need to tip it to store it).. I'll run it for a while and hope it fixes it, thanks..

Oh btw, i didn't store it at a 45 degree angle, i just had to tip it for a second to fit it into the shed, I still stored it flat.. But problem solved now anyway.. :D

Excess white smoke coming from exhaust of TB 75SS string trimmer

This model is a four cycle engine meaning that it does not a mix of gas and 2 cycle oil. You just fill it like your lawn mower, gas and fill the crank case with oil

What sroke is a masport 635. is it two or 4 stroke. it has an openping for the petrol and a seperate opening for the oil.

Judging from what discription you are giving me I would say it is a 4 stroke, so make sure you have either sae 30 or 10/w30 oil in crankcase where it says oil and petrol (gas) in the other tank. 2StrokeJim

I got hold of a sanli 350 lawn mower 4 stroke the people gave me a bottle of 2 stroke oil with the mower is this the right oil to use

No No No No!!! If your mower is definitely a 4 stroke then do NOT put 2 cycle engine oil in it (and I hope they didn't either). Drain out whatever's in there completely and put standard 30 wt. oil in there. Not 10W30, but straight 30 weight. Use synthetic even if you want longer engine life.

I have just bought a Ryobi Expand-it 30cc multi tool 4 stroke. Using it for the first time I filled the oil as instructed, put the petrol in as instructed and then started the machine after 2-3 minutes I...

This may sound like a dumb question, but did you mix the fuel and put it in the machine? If so, you shouldn't have. 4 strokes don't take mixed fuel. You must put the SAE 30 Oil (Not 2 cycle Oil) in a different chamber. Let me know, PLEASE!

I have a Poulan 625 push mower. What type of oil should I use in it? I can't find my manual.

If it has a 4 stroke engine, as most lawnmowers do, then you just car engine oil. Very occasionally you come across 2 stroke mowers.

The way to know if it's a 4 stroke or 2 stroke engine is, if it has an oil tank it's a 4 stroke engine. If there's only the one tank, i.e. you mix the oil with the petrol then it's a 2 stroke engine.

If it's a 2 stroke engine you mix petrol and 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 40:1

I have MTD Yard machine and don't know if it is 2 or 4 cycle. Oil should be-SAE30. Can I use oil for 4-cycle which they soid me i Can. Tire.(M otomaster)

If your mower has seperate fill caps for the oil and the gasoline, then you have a 4 cycle or 4 stroke engine. In this case use SAE HD30 motor oil. If there is only 1 fill cap and it says oil & fuel mix, then you have a 2 cycle or 2 stroke engine.
Good luck

Blue/white smoke from muffler, but when muffler is removed smoke disappears

Obviously it has had oil or similar inside it at one time or another. Have you given it enough running time to burn all that out? How old is lawnmower & was any work done recently to it?
