My cd/dvd drive was working very well 3 days ago. but now it doesn't work.there is the CD/Dvd drive icon in the on the My Computer. But when I insert a cd or Dvd it doesn't read. when I cecked in divice manger cd/dvd drive properties, it indicates this drive is working properly. I can't understand what the reason. Please Help me.
You can try this, Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. Try using it again, hopefully fault free.
My cd/dvd drive was working but now is not
CD/DVD drives working but not recognising inserted disks is often down to a dirty lens. You can buy proprietry lens cleaners but I've had poor results with them. It's not that difficult to clean them properly yourself in about half an hour. You'll need a small philips screwdriver, a cotton bud and a few drops of Isopropyl alcohol. A small pair of pliers might be useful in some cases too, especially if you have fat fingers like mine. Exact dismantling details differ for each make of drive but are basically as follows: 1: While the drive is still powered on in your PC open the drawer (you'll see why later). 2: Shut the PC down and remove the drive from the PC - you will need to disconnect the IDE cable, power plug and the sound cable, if fitted. 3: Turn the drive upside down and remove the bottom cover - about 4 small philips screws hold this in place. You may find it easier to remove the plastic front fascia first which is just clipped in place (this is why you left the drawer open) but sometimes the plate comes off easier when the bottom cover is loosened. 4: You should now see about 4 screws retaining a plastic frame containing the complete internal workings. Remove the screws and take the entire unit out of the main metal casing. Note: In some cases a cicuit board covers these screws. This can be removed - ribbon cables can be removed by firmly pulling them out of their sockets. 5: Turn the unit over so you are looking down at the top of the drive - you will see a small (usually blue coloured) lens. Dip a cotton bud in a small amount of Isopropyl alcohol and very gently clean the lens. The lens is on a lightly sprung mounting so will move when you clean it - be careful not to press too hard. There is no need to dry the lens as the alcohol will quickly evaporate and leave no residue. 6: Reassemble the drive ensuring all internal robbon cables are correctly and firmly inserted back into their sockets. 7: Install the drive back into the PC and reconnect the IDE, power and sound cables. Don't be frightened to try this - it works for me every time and, after all, the drive isn't working so you have nothing to lose by giving it a go.
I replaced 2 times the CD-DVD drive combo Teac dw224e from my toshiba. By experince i develop a way to throubleshoot the Teac dw224e.
If the computer detects the drive (showed in MY COMPUTER), but it can not detect any disk inside (right Click on the Drive Icon, In properties it shows that the media is empty).
Do the following. Eject any cd, dvd indide. Put it again in the drive. If you hear the motor running ,and the lens head moving trying to read, but still you can not access the drive. May be the lens is dirty.
But if you put the cd or DVD, and nothing happen, then the motor is damage or something in the circuit is broken.
Now, if the computer can not detect the drive, then it is broken or the the device is not installed.
I don't know if this will work for everybody but it worked for me. It turns out I have been using the wrong drive all this time. I always thought the upper drive was the one to install new programs, it is the CD/DVD RW drive, and funny thing is it worked for a lot of installations. Well, after removing this drive and taking it apart to clean the blue lens, nothing changed, still wouldn't read many disks. So then I went to the device manager and uninstalled this drive and did a restart. Windows reinstalled the drive, and again, nothing. So as a last resort i thought, let's try the DVD ROM drive, which is second from the top. Presto, everything now works perfectly, I'm going to be up all night installing all the games I bought that wouldn't load. This is like a gift from heaven, and by doing a search on ASK and entering in the search CD?DVD drive won't read disk, I located this site, which led me to solving the problem. I hope this helps some people out there, because it was a very frustrating problem! It's like Christmas all the software that just became 'good'. BINGO!
My cd is not opening some of the pictures which i stored in it a year back..How to solve the problem..
I had the same problem....some games were red while others where no reading....I used a lens Cleaner cd...this solved the problem..

I have a Velocity Micro gaming computer I bought at best buy. It's been pretty good but I noticed a while back it seemed the DVD/CD thing wouldn't read some disks to begin the instalation program or set up. I thought maybe I was getting bum software but now I know something is wrong. Like it will read the Battlefield 2142 game disk every time(thank god), but when I try to install Quake which I bought at Best Buy it acts like nothing is on the disk. Same with disk #1 in Lock On Gold. It's got to be a dirty lens....
