What is the best free virus software out there? And how can I increase the speed of my pc?

The best free antivirus out there would be AVG or AVAST and believe it or not Microsoft Security Essentials.

Just go to www.google.com and in the search box put Download AVG Antivirus or Download AVAST or Download Microsoft Security Essentials.

On AVG just be sure you pay attention to the screen popups during installation to make sure you stay with the FREE version. You don't need PC Analyzer or PC Tune Up that AVG will try to ask you to install. You only want the FREE Virus protection.

I've provided links below that you can click or copy and paste in a browser to get to their download page.

http://free.avg.com/us-en/free-antivirus-download

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

Instructions on cleaning up your pc are below:
How much hard drive space do you have left? ClickStart/My Computer then right click on the Local C: drive and selectproperties. This will show a pie chart of the disk drive.

You might need to invest in a external drive and start taking off some of yourDocuments, Music and Pictures or you could buy a 2nd hard drive and put it inthe computer if it has an extra slot for one.

Are you sure your hard drive is not partitioned off into a C: and a D: and C:is full but D: is sitting there with almost nothing on it? Clicking MyComputer will tell you that because 99% of the time D: is the DvD/CD drive.

So one clarification, Files on the disk drive do not occupy memory, they takeup disk space, so they are not memory hogs. Memory hogs are things likeNorton Antivirus, McAfee Antivirus, AOL products.

If your system is running slow it might have a virus and most definitely ifyou've got Norton or McAfee on it, you can almost bet they've let something in.

Now, let's clean your system up a bit.

Click Start/Programs and look for the RUN command. You might see it anywhereonce you click Programs, or it might be inside the Accessories folder. Click RUN and when it opens up type "msconfig.exe" (without thequotes) then hit ok.

When the System Configuration window opens click the Startup tab. In theStartup Tab we are only concerned with 2 columns, the first column which is theStartup Items and the column that says Command. You can put your mouse pointerbetween two column headings and it will turn into a +, then hold the left mousebutton and drag the column over to the right to expand it so you can readwhat's below it.

Now everything has a check mark beside it. This means that everytime youstart your computer, these items have to load and run. Most of the stuffis good, but there might be so viruses that are running also so we want toremove the check mark from them.

Start with the first time listed under the startup item column and look at itand look at the command for it. Most times you will see something underthe command such as Adobe, Yahoo, Dell, HP, etc. that you know are ok so go tothe next item. Also if you see something under the command like C:\ProgramFiles\.... then it's ok, also C:\Windows\System32\.... then it's ok.

If you see something that does not have anything under the Command column, remove the check mark, it's a virus that's trying to hide.
If you see something that says something like: dumprep 0 -k in the startup itemcolumn remove the check mark from it. Reboot machine.

Most viruses will attach themselves to a User Account and be in one of thehidden folders. If you see something under the Startup Item column thatdoes not make sense such as xjieryert67 or 12326543;ehdyu and when you look atthe Command column it is located in c:\Documents and Settings\the user id\LocalSettings\Application Data\...... remove the check mark because it's avirus. Note that the user id will be the name of one of your useraccounts. It could be something like your name, Owner, User, etc.

When you have been through all the items click OK or Apply then OK andthe system will show you restart options. Select Exit Without Restart sothat the machine does not reboot yet.

Don't be afraid about removing the check mark from something. All thisdoes is stop something from starting when you boot your machine. You canalways go back in and put the check mark back on something.

Now all we've done so far is stopped the virus from running when you boot yourmachine. The next thing we want to do is kill it.

Open your internet browser and go to www.google.com and in the search box type:'Download Cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes) and you will see a sitecalled download.cnet/malwarebytes. Download and install MalwareBytes fromthat site. When their site opens be sure to click on the Green Downloadbutton on the left, that's malwarebytes. Don't click the Red Downloadbutton, that's some junk.

Once malwarebytes is at the end of the installation process it will pop up theGui Interface and a popup window overlaying it that says Decline or Accept a 30Day Trial. CLICK DECLINE and your copy will always be FREE without atrial period. Then take the option to RUN A QUICK SCAN.

The Quick Scan will run and if it finds infections the number will be shown inRED. When it is done you will click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text documentwill open up showing you the results of the scan. You can close itbecause we are only interested in the Gui Interface. Next click REMOVESELECTED RESULTS and the results will already be selected for you. Oncethe infections are removed you will be instructed to click and reboot yourcomputer.

If you're amazed at how many infections Norton or McAfee let in give them theboot and go with a FREE Antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials, AVGAntivirus or AVAST Antivirus. If you're going to get a virus, WHY PAY FORIT WHEN YOU CAN GET ONE FREE.

Also when you reboot and everything is running smoothly go into www.google.comand search for "download Mozilla Firefox", and "DownloadOpera" and "Download Google Chrome". Download and installeach of these internet browsers, you don't need to make them your defaultbrowser unless you want to. They are much faster and safer than InternetExplorer. if you want a virus, continue using Internet Explorer. Anddon't worry they don't take a long time to install like Internet Explorer theyinstall very fast.

More little things that makes your system run faster:
Don't install toolbars from everybody that wants to stick it on your internetbrowser. You only need Google and Yahoo toolbars. Toolbars willclutter your browser and slow it down and some just let viruses, addware andspyware in.

Be careful when you search the internet and download something because someproducts like Norton, McAfee and Ask will already have a check mark by them toinstall on your system. You don't need that junk.

Click Start/Program and look in your program list and uninstall any buggy andjunk programs such as: Weather Bug, anything from Freeze.com, My Fun WebProducts, My Web Search, Coupons, Rebates, Norton Products, McAfee Products, etc.

Sometimes there will not be an uninstall option for Norton or McAfee. Inthat case click Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs in windows XP. For Vistaclick Start/Control Panel/Programs and Features. When the window opensshowing you all the installed programs, click to highlight the one you want toremove and click uninstall, on some it might say remove.

Most people rely on Norton and McAfee because that is what they have on theirjob. On the Job, they have what is called the Enterprise Version ofNorton or McAfee, plus they have someone there monitoring it all thetime. The Enterprise Version is a good product, but what they sell youand I in the store is the consumer version which is nothing but a core hog andjunk. Also now since they realize people are gaining knowledge about theproducts they give it away Free from your Internet Service Provider. Alsoremember this, on your job you're on lock down. You can't go to certainsites, you can't get to your personal email, etc. So that help protect thecompany from getting viruses. At home there are no restrictions unlessyou're smart enough to set them.

I have a trogen virus and no money can I fix it for free?

You can use free antivirus like Avira, Avg or Avast, they are as effective as full version antivirus if updated regularly and registered successfully.

You can download::
1. Avast Free

2. Avg Free

4. Avira Free

Don't install two antivirus at a time, if you are installing one of them or if there's any antivirus program installed on your computer, please uninstall and install the new one, otherwise you may have another problem with your problem.

First install Avast and run a full system scan, then check the scanned result, if you are sure that those trojans or virus etc..etc.. are removed, you are done, no need to uninstall and reinstall the other, or if you still doubt, you can try with the other two after the first one is uninstalled.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Please tell me whichanti virus is best for my PC

That's like asking which car company is best or which cell phone company. Ten people would give you ten different answers.

There's a couple free ones that are some what highly regarded: AVG Free is beloved many people as is MS Security Essentials.

I couldn't speak to the quality of paid solutions like McAfee or Norton as I haven't used them in many years. As long as you have something it should be better than nothing at all!

I need to restore my computer so I can get online to get antiviru

download AVG on someone elses computer, put it on a disk. uninstall your old antivirus and install AVG. AVG is free and very good. (google AVG).
If your computer is not online, you are not exposed to much malicious software. I certainly thing restoring your computer will do nothing to reactivate your old antivirus.

AVG free edition should do the trick, but the safest way to get rid of a virus is reformatting your hard drive.

We are a Church and do not have a credit card to enable me to renew Anti Virus Protection online. Is it possible to be billed and pay by cheque?

Do not renew your subscription. I am guessing it is Norton(Symantec) or McAfee, unfortunately both of these once reputable anitivirus applications have become loaded with a lot of intrusive software that eats up system resources and slows your computer down.
Use a free antivirus application like AVG, Avast or NOD32. These free applications are just as good if not better to be honest, than either Norton or McAfee.
Here is a link to download the free version of AVG 8.0.

I am the securities moderator on another forum and AVG is by far the most popular antivirus package.
