Nikon D40 stopped working

I have an Nikon D40 a little over a year old. It has been working perfectly until the other day after I uploaded pictures to my computer. Those uploaded fine, but now whenever I turn my camera on the only thing it will do is the lcd screen will say connecting to pc. It won't do anything else! Help!

At first I would get a message that the battery needed recharging even though it was freshly charged. I hit the reset button and now nothing works at all.

Connect the mini usb calbe to Camera only. Camera will working like used to be without cable. Go to setup menu and Change USB setting to P, PTP. then unplug the miniusb and hopefully camera will work as it once was.

It worked for me :)

Try using a different usb port. might be the pc just can't detect your cam.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on

Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

Hi,

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

Goodluck..

When I hold down the button 1/2 way to auto focus there is a squeking noise and it never takes the picture. It just stopped working, has worked prior to this. It will still take pictures in manual focus,...

You have 9-10 contacts on the lens which mate to 9-10 contacts in the camera. All need to have good connection, which may require a q-tip and a little rubbing alcohol. Make sure it is dry before you mount up the lens. Should work.

When the camera is in auto focus mode, it will not take the picture until it locks onto a subject. If there is not enough light, the camera will "hunt" for something to focus on. Since it can't define any edges, it won't allow the shutter to release.

The D40 base model does NOT have a powered focus lever for autofocus, so if the autofocus is not working, suspect the lens.

Taking pics

That's because the Nikon D40 does not have Live View. Up until a couple of years ago, no DSLR's had live preview, due to the design of a DSLR over a point and shoot, as it has a pentamirror arrangement that effectivly deflects the light path to the viewfinder and only to the sensor when the internal mirror is raised. Early live preview models from Olympus had the world's first Live View system by flipping the mirror so that the picture preview could be seen on the rear monitor. Most manufacturers now incorporate Live View into most of their models but most Nikon consumer models do not as yet, apart from the newly relesed D90. The D40 and D40x are two year old designs and therefore do not have the more "modern" specs of say the Olympus E520 or Canon EOS450D. Most photographers trading up from a compact to a DSLR are surprised when they cannot use the LCD monitor in the same way. However for most aspects of DSLR photography Live View is not something that is used all the time, low down shots, and macro perhaps being the most convenient use, but for general photography there is no substitute for framing through the viewfinder, that's what we've been used to doing for over half a century! Besides as pointed out previously a DSLR is often too heavy to hand hold at arms length especially with a long lens.

I had the same problem. I sent my camera to the Nikon Service Center. They fixed it within three days. They actually replaced the whole aperture frame. FREE OF CHARGE AS LONG WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD.
