Logitech QuickCam Communicate MP - black screen

OS: Windows Vista 32
Webcam: Logitech QuickCam Communicate MP
Logitech Software Version: 11.80

Thiswebcam worked fine when it was first installed. Within the first coupleweeks, I began having the problem of seeing a black screen instead of avideo image, with both the logitech software and Yahoo Messenger. A fewtimes, this problem was fixed, by restarting computer, and once byending all related processes in Task Manager, then restarting Logitechsoftware.

Currently, I am only seeing the black screen, andcannot get a video image. I did uninstall all Logitech software, restart the computer, and reinstall Logitech software. The problempersists. I have not received any error messages at any time relatingto this problem. The camera appears to work fine; however, it only shows black.

Thank you for this very detailed response. I tried the steps you suggested, but they did not help figure out my problem. The amcap application crashed every time I clicked "video capture pin." I checked my DirectX version, and it is version 10.

The strange and partially frustrating thing is that now my webcam appears to be working fine. I guess it is an intermittent problem. I called Logitech support, who told me they can't diagnose a problem while the camera is working. They suggested I call back when it is not working, to see if there might be a conflict with other software that is running at the time.

Thanks again, and good luck to others with this problem.

  1. Either one of these image sizes:
    • Small image size: 160 x 120
    • Large image size: 320 x 240
  2. RGB, I420, or IYUV formats. (Each is fine; we recommend RGB 24.)
  3. Microsoft DirectX version 9.0
To get this information, click here to download a Microsoft application that checks to see if your webcam device meets these requirements.
To make it easy, when you’re asked where to Save the program, just save it on your Desktop.
Once it’s downloaded, here’s what to do:
  1. Double-click the amcap.exe file on your desktop.
    • If you have more than one webcam installed, click the Devices menu and select the one you want to use.
  2. Click the Options menu, then click “Video capture Pin.”
  3. Under “Color Space/Compression:”, choose one of the following formats:
    • RGB 24 (our recommendation)
    • I420
    • IYUV
Note: If one of the options above isn’t in the list, then your webcam is not compatible with Yahoo!7 Messenger.
  4. Under “Output Size”, choose one of the following:
    • 160 x 120
    • 320 x 240
Note: If one of the options above isn’t in the list, then your webcam is not compatible with Yahoo!7 Messenger.
  5. Click OK
  6. Close the ampcap application.
  7. From your desktop, click ‘Start’ and select ‘Run’.
  8. In the run box, type: dxdiag
  9. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.
  10. On the System Tab under ‘System Information’, look for DirectXversion. Verify that your version is DirectX 9.0. If it is, just click Exit. If your version is older than 9.0 (any lower number), click here to download the latest version of DirectX.
  11. Start the webcam from Messenger by clicking My Webcam in the Messenger menu.
Attention Logitech webcam users:
Some Logitech webcam drivers may cause one of the following problems:
  • Windows freezes when accessing the webcam
  • A black screen appears when using the webcam in Messenger
  • A ‘Webcam not found’ error message appears.
  • After 3 seconds, the sound drops out of calls made via Messenger
If you already verified that your device is compatible through the above steps and you’re a Logitech webcam user, please click here to update your Logitech webcam driver.

Lost Install CD For Quickcam Communicate Plus (S5500)

I'm pretty sure the drivers will work the same.

To find out if you need 32-bit or 64-bit, just do the following:
  • Click on Windows Button
  • Right-Click on Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Scroll down to System Type and you will see if your machine is 64-bit or 32-bit.

QuickCam Zoom not working after upgrade to Vista

Just read the most wonder article on how toe fix your quickcam zoom for vista follow these steps

These is from 2007 post so you will have to google for the drivers mentioned. I did and it worked

I have a Logitech Quickcam Zoom and this is how I got it to work:
1. Install QuickCam 32-bit Version: 10.5.0 Build 1096b
It can be found here: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/CA/EN,CRID=1794,contentid=10234
2. When you get to the camera detection part where it asks you to plug in your camera, plug it into a new usb port (if you had it plugged in when you installed Vista) and just press skip.
3. Windows may try and find the driver for it, you can cancel that too.
4. Install the old QuickCam software (Version: 8.4.8 build 1034A)and overwrite anything it asks you to (it will fail to install completely because of the new version, but it will put the files you need into the Logitech program files directory.
The old software is here: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/CA/EN,CRID=1794,contentid=7649
5. Go to the windows orb (former start button), open control panel, go to system, then on the top left of the window click device manager.
6. Find the unknown usb device (hopefully you only have one... otherwise unplug anything else that doesn't work or you haven't updated the driver for yet)
7. Right click and select update driver, choose a location to find the driver, navigate your way to C:\Program Files\Logitech\QuickCamWebInstall\Drivers\WinNew\PRO2
8. Press OK or whatever, and let it install.
9. Enjoy!

Mine didn't even need to reboot and worked with the 10.5 QuickCapture software. Still need to test with Skype and Live Messenger though.
