Outlets in my house have started to quit having power...not certain rooms, but just randomly...one wall in master, same wall connecting two rooms, one wall in kitchen...and ideas?
Sounds like one breaker tripped. reset it
As an outlet ages, they do tend to stop operating.
Normally a licensed electrician should be utilized when dealing with electricity, as ELECTRICITY SHOULD BE RESPECTED!!!!
But... if you are very careful and focused, you can do your own electrical repairs if you are the homeowner working on your own stuff. If you are able to isolate the circuit breaker for the outlets not working, then turn off the breaker. Then loosen the single screw to the plate and remove it. Then carefully loosen the two screws that hold the outlet in the box and remove the outlet. Carefully pull the outlet straight out, holding the top & bottom tabs only. If the correct breaker was not turned off, the wires on the side will be hot! Once outlet pulled out, take your multimeter and place your meter leads on the black and white wires. If there are 4 wires on the outlet, it is feeding another outlet, (and may be fed by another outlet?) determining if it is the 1st outlet in the stream is a difficult undertaking. But if only two wires are on it... then it maybe the only outlet on the circuit, which then is considered a "Dedicated" outlet. Or... it is the last outlet in the stream. Anyway... If you had a 110-120 volts read on the meter, then you had not turned off the correct breaker. If no voltage, go flip the turned off breaker back on. Recheck for voltage. Should be 110-120 volts. If no voltage, and all breakers are ON, then there is a break in the flow of voltage. If the breaker in question has power, and outlet is not working, then install a new 15 amp outlet. (A 20 amp outlet should be installed if there was already one there and all is sized correctly, if you do not need a 20 amp outlet there, and you are unsure if wired and sized correctly, then use a 15 amp outlet). If no voltage, see if you can find an outlet upstream. It may be a bad connection there or that outlet is bad as well?
Good Luck
• One should inspect the Convenient Outlet first.
• Check the breakers on the Main Panel
• For electrical wirings check the Building Plan.
These should be done with a license electrician,
Supervise by an electrical engineer or master electrician.
and must conforms with National Building Code.
