when it is on with no other programs other then whats needed for the laptop cpu is at 1%, pm is at 52318 and available is 301188 and cache is 205792. but when i am running my isp and spy ware and paltalk programs the cpu jumps up and down between 35 to 100 and the pm 523184 total and available is 90365 and cache is 206192. and all programs on the laptop work great with no slow down. its just my keyboard delay that seems to be the problem. scott

You haven't mentioned how other programs behave. i would suggest it is spyware slowing your computer down or one program that is using up to my cpu usage. hitting control-alt-delete will bring up your task manager... at the bottom it shows cpu and memory usage as a percent.... what are the amounts ?

at times when the cpu hits 100% i can guarentee you the keyboard will be lagged... consider running msconfig and removing some of the programs that run at startup.

what program are you using when it lags.... or where are you typing ?

    Robert

and i'm suspecting spyware... a few free programs to remove them... when was the last time you defragged your computer as well ?

  • Roberta Smith
    Roberta Smith Dec 16, 2008

spybot s&d and adaware.... get them both as they are freeware... i'll post some other programs to use after you have installed them... updated them and run a scan.

something did just occur to me... is it a consistant delay or just occasionally ?

  • Roberta Smith
    Roberta Smith Dec 17, 2008

guess i misunderstood you the first time then... go to start... control panel.... keyboard double click on that... when the window pops up you can change the repeat rate on the keyboard.

Let me know how you make out with that

  • Roberta Smith
    Roberta Smith Dec 17, 2008

ok... frustrating.... go into the start menu.... right click on my computer.... click on device manager... it's been awhile since i've used xp but i believe there is a hardware tab ... then it will be one of the buttons.... if not hardware click on each tab till you find the device manager button.... when you click on that a window will pop up... go to the keyboard thing and click on the plus sign to expand the window... i presume you only see one keyboard there.

right click on it and select uninstall... yes uninstall... then you will get an ominous warning... click ok .... it should immediately reinstall the keyboard... if not go to the menu tabs and the top and select scan for hardware changes from one of the pop down menus

    see how it works then

oh and is this some kind of fancy keyboard ???

  • Roberta Smith
    Roberta Smith Dec 17, 2008

if you mean restart as in reboot.... then reboot it... it will detect and install the keyboard as it reboots

    one more thing to try

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.w...

go to that website and download the keyboard optimizer for the operating system you have... perhaps you can make changes there.

scott it's ok... i love a challenge... i just wish people realized that we are indeed volunteering our time and of course i always think to myself... it may frustrate me ... but it frustrates you to have the problem in the first place.. at least you are pleasant ... i've got lots of abuse on here too

    Take care

    Robert

and let me know if that does infact sort out the problem... if not i'll be around again tomorrow sometime.

T42p display lights for a couple of minutes through startup then goes dark

But fan still runs, and it sounds like the harddrive is spinning?

Diagnose.

Do you have a VGA monitor available?
You can use a CRT type, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the VGA monitor cable to the left side of the ThinkPad T42. (DisplayPort)

2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By factory default, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
If not;

There are at least three display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY.

Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the F7 key. The F7 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

3) Good display on external monitor?
Problem is the video cable, or inside the Display Assembly.

Since the display goes dark after a couple of minutes, I can tell you the problem is the screen Inverter, or Backlight.
(Inside the Display Assembly)

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is a bad screen Inverter.

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

The Lenovo ThinkPad T42 series of Notebook PC's, uses a single CCFL for a Backlight,

http://www.screentekinc.com/IBM__ThinkPad__T42-series-laptops-lcd-screens.shtml

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

[Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height ]

A screen Inverter converts the power from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

(Older versions of backlighting that used a series of LED's, used a screen Inverter. Newer versions do not. For these replace the LCD screen)

A screen Inverter and an LCD screen are a MATCHED unit. Make sure you get the correct screen Inverter, or LCD screen, when buying.

Primer over.

What is the fn key

The fn key is the function key. I am sure that helps a ton. The fn key works like a shift key, changing the buttons marked fn, like volume, screen brightness, etc. The use is that you press and hold the function key, and press teh function button and then release both.
Common uses are to turn off the mousepad, while typing, and to set screen brightness while under battery....

Once it undocks from a station, it types numbers instead of letters. I don't remember the two key sequence to get it back to letters. How?

Hi,

Find the NumLock key (probably also the ScrlLk key). Press and hold Shift, then press and release NumLock.

It should now be back to normal.

Number keys on think pad lock using openoffice.org

On Thinkpads laptops the keys on the right hand side double up as the number keypad. To switch on the Number lock key pad on - press and hold the Shift key and press the NumLk/ScrLk key, it is above the F11 key, the Num lock LED will also light up. Press these keys again to turn off the Numer Lock.

Why did the subscript numbers of the keyboard are entered instead of letters? how can i change it?

This can happen if the Fn (function key) is held down while the scroll key (number lock) is pressed. Try holding the Fn key down and press the scroll key to see if the letters free up.

Connect the laptop to an external monitor, you may have to hold down the Function key and press the F8 or F7 CRT/LCD key to switch between monitor and display, to see if the video card is defective.
I hope this helps solve your problem.
Good Luck.

IBM t42 Display problem

Sometimes there are keys are your laptop that adjust your settings.
If you know which keys you can hit the fn key simultaneously.
If your not sure go on line and you should be able to find a site that will tell you how to adjust your screen.
In search type your laptop model then type display settings
