Your Compaq did not detect the hard disk, that is why it is asking for a bootable device such as a boot floppy disk. Check the BIOS configuration to see if the hard disk is detected, if not then re-seat the hard drive and boot up the Compaq again. If it still does not boot up, then the hard disk is probably faulty. To get the Compaq operating again, replace the faulty, install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, plus the Compaq's device drivers and your programs.
When you first start the computer, go to the BIOS (usually press [Delete]) and make sure the hard drive you are installing Windows XP to is the second or third boot device. If your CD drive is IDE and your hard drive is SATA you may have a problem in the BIOS of not being able to cross from IDE to SATA.
the reason you probably cant install is because your probably trying to install windows XP on a sata hard drive.. xp doesnt contain sata hard drive drivers.. u either have to use vista, find the sata controller drivera nd load from floppy by hitting F6 during setup.. or have someone slipstream the drivers into a copy of xp.. try emailing firstname.lastname@example.org as I know they can help
I had the same issue with sony vaio, try to download superdisc and the burn it to a bootable cd. Boot the system from the superdisc and then try to erase the MBR and then try to install, it should work.
You cannot install Windows XP over WIndows Vista. Microsoft has put a lock on the Vista software and will not allow you to downgrade to a lower software. The only way you can do it is to wipe your hard drive completely clean first with a disk deleting software or with the command "fdisk" at the DOS prompt. However, this is dangerous and I do not recommend it unless you have someone professionally trained to do it. It will wipe everything off of your disk and then you can load Windows XP.

You are EXACTLY correct you need a SATA driver. The laptop you have comes with a SATA drive. You can go to the link below then select the exact model ofyour laptop so you get the right driver. You can see the exact model number under the laptop in the sticker paper tacked on.
