I can send you a powerpoint presentation that explains it in a little more detail. To really learn how to read latitude and longitude you should pick up a copy of “Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.”

The earth is divided into parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, also known as lines of position.

Garmin Hand held GPS Operation - clip_image002.jpg

Latitude is measured north and south of the equator, with the equator represented as 0 degrees, and the poles being represented as 90 degrees North or South. Latitude lines are paralel to the equator. For example, if I was at the equator I would be at 0 degrees. If I traveled exactly 60 nautical miles to the north, I would be at 1 degree North, and if I traveled another 60 miles I would be at 2 degrees north. Your GPS display will preface the Latitude measurement with an “N” for positions North of the equator and an “S” for positions south of the equator.

Longitude measures your position east or west from the Prime Meridian, which is a line represented as 0 degrees that bisects the earth from north to south and passes through Greenwich England. Halfway around the earth at the International Dateline Longitude is 180 degrees. Measuring Longitude is a little more complicated because the lines are not parallel and requires an accurate clock (your GPS) to compare time at your location relative to the time in Greenwich England. Your GPS display will preface the Longitude measurement with a “W” for positions west of Greenwich and an “E” for positions east of Greenwich.

To make more accurate measurements each degree is divided into 60 minutes. Because the lines are parallel, 1 minute of latitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. Each minute can be further divided into 60 seconds. Each second is roughly equivalent to a distance of 100’ Instead of seconds, the default setting on your Garmin breaks the minute down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for meven more precise measurements. Because they are not parallel, lines of Longitude are measured the same way, but the distances vary depending on how far north or south of the equator.

To find out where you are with a GPS, you need a map that shows lines of latitude and longitude on it. The lines will be labeled on the map or along the borders of the map. Most nautical charts show the latitude measurements along the right the left border of the map. Longitude measuremnts will be shown along the top and bottom edges.

Garmin 76 MAP crashes after 3+ min of operation leaving a single vertical line which can only be removed by removing batteries. Is there a fix?

Hello,

I would suggest you reset the unit, if that doesn't solve the problem, then you will have to update your garmin nuvi, I think it needs to be updated. The unit is having a software issue. Usually, update helps to fix the unit's software problems.

Performing a Standard Reset

1. Slide the power switch all the way to the left (with the Nuvi's screen facing you).
2. Hold the switch in the position for at least eight seconds.
3. Push the switch to the right to power the Nuvi back on.

Performing a Factory Reset

1. Turn your Nuvi off by sliding the power switch to the left.
2. Press your finger against the bottom right corner of the touchscreen. Hold your finger in this position.
3. Slide the power switch to the right to turn the Nuvi back on. Continue to hold you finger against the screen until you see the factory reset prompt. Tap "Yes" to perform the factory reset.

Follow the procedures below on how to update your garmin nuvi:

1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.
2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web addres: "http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27 "
3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults).
4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

Also, in case you don't know how to reset your garmin nuvi, you can follow the steps below: There are two types of reset;

Nuvi 710 will not start up and is stuck on the Garmin page. I have tried the reset procedure - thumb on lower right hand corner of the screen etc. etc. but nothing happens. Any suggestions?

This is a rare glitch ive come across with some different Garmin GPS's. I just had to send it out to Garmin by calling them up at 1-800-800-1020 tell them your problem, give them the serial number on the GPS i believe is on the bottom or back of the GPS. They will give you all the information needed to get your Nuvi sent to them and have them repair/ replace the faulty unit. The whole process took me about 2-3 days from sending it out to getting my replacement.

I forgot my password how do I get into my garmin

Put your finger in the upper right corner of the screen and keep it there as you power up the unit. You will be asked to clear all user data if you select Yes it clears everything. On the other hand if you use the lower left corner at start up you will end up in maintenance mode which may have some info in the error reports.
or
Perhaps you could try the reset button.

1. Raise the antenna.
2. Press the reset button.

When I turned on my Garmin nuv 255W Car GPS Receiver it reminded me to update it because my software was over a year old. My question is how do I update if possible without incurring any cost? Andy

Hi soami696,

To update the software for your unit, free of charge, follow these instructions:

1. Go to http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater, and download WebUpdater to your computer.
2. Connect the GPS unit to your computer using the Mini-USB cable.
3. Run WebUpdater and follow the on-screen instructions.

After confirming that you want to the update, WebUpdater will automatically download the update and install it on your device.

Reboot your GPS receiver, and you should have the latest updated software from Garmin.

For a copy of a manual for your series of GPS units, go to this link and download here:
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/2675_OwnersManual.pdf

This manual covers operation of several 200 series Garmin GPS Receivers, such as 205, 205W, 215, 215W, 255, 255W, 265, 265W, 275, and 285W, etc.

Let me know how this works out for you, and if you need further assistance, I'll be glad to help. Thanks.
