Toshiba is the biggest piece of **** box made next to panasonic! Take it from a kyocera tech that was forced to work on the those toshiba dogs. No wonder they lost the hd war with sony. I'm a tech in central saskatchewan.

Are you still receiving faxes although you are unable to send? Or is it no send & no receive? When you hook a phone up are you able to connect with a # dialed from that phone. It's possible that the problem is the copiers NCU board- but it's rare that they fail & even more rare that it loses just the send portion. You'll want to be absolutly sure that it's not the phone line. If you are positive that the problem is not the phone line - try turning the machine off & unplugging the power cord for 30 minutes. Occasionally the NCU card will lock up & not function properly. Unplugging the machine for 30 minutes has worked for me in the past.

Toshiba E455 w/fax kit is not sending and receiving faxes well. Our phone vendor is saying that the baud rate is set too high on the Toshiba's and our system cannot handle it.???? Is this true?

Granted I only have 27 years in the copier/fax/printer service business but I have never heard of the fax comunication speed being set to high for a phone line to handle. If you get some or most faxes ok then I tend to suspect ECM being the cause in these cases. ECM stands for Error Correction Mode. I do not know how to tell you to check it on your machine as I am not familiar enough with the 455 but you need to check your fax settings and try turning ECM mode to OFF. It stll could be phone line related but turning off ECM will fix most of those issues.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Sent a fax and report came back with result message"error 390" What does that mean? regards Lisa

Hi Lisa,
According to the HP manual, this error code is consistent with a communication error. in other words, the machine tried to send your fax, but could not get anywhere.
I would:
1. Turn off the printer, then turn it back on. send a test fax to another number, see if it works.
2. check where your phone line connects to the printer, and make sure the phone line is plugged in to the correct phone jack on the device. If it is, take it out, and put it back in. Test sending a fax again.
3. If this doesn't work, test your fax line. hook it up to a phone- see if you can hear a dial tone from it. If so, the line is active. If not, you may need to troubleshoot for a phone line problem, which your telephone provider can assist you with.
4. If the phone line is alright, but the printer still doesn't work- something could be internally wrong with the printer. Call HP for further support, and they will be able to assist you by getting it repaired.

Problem faxing-error message

Error 388:
Definition

There is too much noise on the line for a valid connection between two fax machines to complete. The noise problem might go away over time.

Solution

Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.

Error 403:
Definition

During a V.34 transmission, the local machine is unable to connect (handshake) with the remote machine and is consequently unable to send a T30 frame. This occurs when the line is disconnected or if line conditions degrade during the session.

Solutions
  • Remove any pass-through devices from the phone line, and then try the fax again.
  • Confirm that the fax/phone cable is no longer than required, and that it does not pass near unshielded electric motors such as fans, heaters, or household appliances.
  • Try to send the fax at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved.

Fax display screen always reads, "Auto receive". When attempting to fax, the busy light flashes. Busy light stops flashing for 30 seconds, then starts flashing again.
Above is the default settings for the fax.

NGB0 indicates signal error or line condition error.
U need to check the phone line. U can hook any single line phone to the phone line, check for tones without background noise.

keep the window closed ok? that's more along the lines of the phone issues, than the fax machine itself..there are many ways to outwit the phone tree issues, but each number would need to be encoded directly.
