Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I have set up & installed a Denon 589BA AVR, every connection and assignation seems to be in order but no sound other than static is produced. All 5 Boston Acoustic Speakers work as I was briefly able to get stereo TV, no sound is produced when I play a DVD either. I have a Direct TV DVR/box. My TV is a 2002 Toshiba without HDMI ports so I'm using component cables for video and Optical for Audio. Any suggestons? Thank you

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls try:

  • disconnect all cables from the various sources other than the speakers;
  • select FM;
  • determine if there will be sound and not only static;
  • try the different modes (Decoders Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital, DTS decoder) or with no sound processing, plain & simple FM reception/listening;
  • if there is sound and no static, then the Denon 589BA AVR generally is OK;
  • connect the DVD's aduio L/R, red/white;
  • pklay a known good DVD;
  • set Denon 589BA AVR to DVD;
  • try the different modes (Decoders Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital, DTS decoder) or with no sound processing, plain & simple DVD listening;
  • do the same to all others;
  • finally, connect the Optical Out of the Toshiba;
  • set the Denon 589BA AVR to Optical IN,
  • determine if there will be sound and not only static;
  • If yes, then you are set;
  • if not then the Optical Audio OUT of the Toshiba is the issue.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

It could be a hardware failure, check you radio (am and fm - need antenna hookedup) and see if you can get good sound from there.. if not, there may be an internal problem. If radio comes in ok, then it may be wiring. Make sure no speaker wires are stripped down too far causing them to short out, on both ends. It could be as simple as setting an input to digital instead of analog (dvd sound).. there is usually a signal type button of some sort, push to switch from analog to digital.

This may require quite a bit more info. Verify that there are no shorts in the speaker connections to the Denon - it has a short detection circuit that will shut down the audio amps in the event of a short. If you are using optical or coaxial digital input for you audio - verify that the correct digital input has been assigned to the component selected on the Source Select dial: Menu > Source Select > Assign > Digital. If this is an HDMI connection go into the HDMI setup menu and select Audio: AMP: Menu > Manual Setup > HDMI Setup > Audio > AMP. If it is set to TV the audio passes through the AMP without being decoded and goes to the TV instead: there is no 'Both' setting.

Subwoofer will not produce sound. Connections are correct. I do hear a hum or a crackel as I pull the connection on and off. AVR-689 model

In order to ensure output to your subwoofer: make sure the subwoofer is connected to the subwoofer out of your amplifier and make sure that your amplifier/receiver is set to output multi channel sound

Denon AVR 1804

You need to get the manual and do some reading first. I couldn't find the AVR-1804 but the AVR-1803 is avaiable. It should be close enough to get you through connection and setup.

Plug your rear 5.1 speakers into the surround speaker connections. Be sure to use the AVR 1908 set up menu to set rear speakers (not an amp assign). Hope this helps.

Denon AVR 1609 Receiver Zone 2 has no sound

you have to change the power amp assignment to zone 2, you must also have Analog audio connections to the Denon from your devices.
Try this put your remote in the zone 2 mode, select tuner in zone 2 and turn zone 2 volume up to -10
