Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I have set up & installed a Denon 589BA AVR, every connection and assignation seems to be in order but no sound other than static is produced. All 5 Boston Acoustic Speakers work as I was briefly able to get stereo TV, no sound is produced when I play a DVD either. I have a Direct TV DVR/box. My TV is a 2002 Toshiba without HDMI ports so I'm using component cables for video and Optical for Audio. Any suggestons? Thank you

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls try:

  • disconnect all cables from the various sources other than the speakers;
  • select FM;
  • determine if there will be sound and not only static;
  • try the different modes (Decoders Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital, DTS decoder) or with no sound processing, plain & simple FM reception/listening;
  • if there is sound and no static, then the Denon 589BA AVR generally is OK;
  • connect the DVD's aduio L/R, red/white;
  • pklay a known good DVD;
  • set Denon 589BA AVR to DVD;
  • try the different modes (Decoders Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital, DTS decoder) or with no sound processing, plain & simple DVD listening;
  • do the same to all others;
  • finally, connect the Optical Out of the Toshiba;
  • set the Denon 589BA AVR to Optical IN,
  • determine if there will be sound and not only static;
  • If yes, then you are set;
  • if not then the Optical Audio OUT of the Toshiba is the issue.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

It could be a hardware failure, check you radio (am and fm - need antenna hookedup) and see if you can get good sound from there.. if not, there may be an internal problem. If radio comes in ok, then it may be wiring. Make sure no speaker wires are stripped down too far causing them to short out, on both ends. It could be as simple as setting an input to digital instead of analog (dvd sound).. there is usually a signal type button of some sort, push to switch from analog to digital.

I have a Denon AVR 4806. I use hdmi cables for my connection. I lose the picutre for about 15 seconds every 20 to 30 minutes. I still have sound but just lose picture. How can I fix this?

Hi,

In short, HDMI will not work.
HDMI is riddled with issues, your's is just one of many!
HDMI version 1.1,1.2,1.2a,&1.2b do not work 100% on any receiver.

The current version is 1.3b and "so far" it works...

Now the bad news; It's not just a software patch to fix the problem, it's a hardware issue as well. If your unit is still under warranty, the manufacturer will update hardware and software for you at N/C. If it's out of warranty, it's way too expensive to have done!

The fix is to run your HDMI directly to your TV from source, ie. Cable,DVD, etc. then run coaxial digital or optical to your receiver for audio.

Hope this helps.

If you need furthur assistance you can leave me comments, i may help you

Try checking first the connection for the audio, then make sure the surround sound receviver is also connected properly and also turn everything OFF then turn back ON since you have a disruption just to refersh all devices and check it again if there will be sound already..

Hope that helps..........

Will not stay on., Automatically turns off.

Try pressing in both the menu and device/input buttons in together on the front of the set and hold for 5 seconds to see if the led will blink a two digit error code such as 2 blinks then a pause then two more blinks followed by a pause which would indicate a 22 error. Then let me know what the blink code was if any.

Hi, could you please help me? I have sound but no video... Video works to plasma above fireplace if I plug the red/blue/green cables directly into the cable box, but not if it goes through the Denon...

This is typical. Your Denon has "assignable" inputs for both audio and video.

Basics... your AVR is not processing the correct video input of the source selction you have pressed.

I hate to be the pain here but, you are going to have to read the manual related to your Denon model # in order to figure out how to change these settings.

Usually it is not very hard. I suggest going to the Denon website and downloading the manual for your unit. After reading though the manual (usually toilet reading material) you will understand how to change and assign these settings/inputs.

Good Luck...

When we finished watching a DVD and switched back to TV, the Denon AVR 2807 receiver would not produce any sound. We tried following the manual directions for function and input mode but no luck. Help!

Our expert solved the problem for me. I did not realize it until I turned off TV and turned it on the next morning and the sequence he told us to follow had worked! Sound restored. He was wonderful and patient. Thanks.

Have a denon avr 588 surround reciever that does not stay on the on/stand by button has a red light that is flashing it powers on for about 3 seconds then shuts off and then the red light starts flahing

this could be two wires touching on the back connections. one wire touching another ...just one will do this! look close and causing a short (its shutting off is a safety feature so the unit does not overheat)

I have a Denon AVR-3300. I am getting picture but no sound in the TV/DBS mode. Every other connection is working fine.

Try switching one of the working source connections to the TV/DBS connection. Also note that TV and DBS are actually separate inputs on some models.

Surround Sound gets static

I'm trying to understand if the speakers are connected directly to the TV, or via an amp. If you have an option try connecting them through an amp so that the TV doesnt have to amp them, you'll get better results. even if there was no static in the first place its a better idea. Good luck!
