Question about Akai PTH5498 54" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
I was having a converge problem with my TV. I order a whole new board and installed it. I then went into the service menu and did a complete 54 point converge, saved it and then turned the TV back on and it worked fine picture looked good. I then read to change the VML to 0 which I did throught the service menu. The I hooked up my DVD player up to video 2, went to play a movie had sound but no picture. I rechecked my cables still no luck. So I went in the service menu again changed the VML back to 2 saved it. Turn TV off then back on still no picture but sound.
My satelite reciever is hooked up to s-video 1 and that worked fine. So then went back into the service menu, did the reset. Now after I did that the tv is in black and white and gray now. Still the same problem when playing the dvd player. Not sure what went wrong, but could use some adivse on how to fix this. Any help would be very much apriciated.
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
To my knowledge, an Akai PTH5498 is a re-branded Samsung PTH54985S. Your best bet would then be to follow the procedure as outlined in the Service Manual. All others would be suspect as the settings would be "played by ear". Whereas the manual layouts step by step alignment procedures and checklist for faults/malfunctions.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Some data must have changed when you went into service menu. Changing the VML shouldn't be required with the convergence repair, just the alignment. Was the picture gone before you changed other data? If going into service mode caused the problem, you need to get the service manual and punch back in the default data to get it back to where it was. If the DVD player is hooked up to s-video, check your cable. likely one of pins bent over making you lose your chroma signal. you should have 4 pins like below. You might be able to bend the pin back but a normal composite (yellow rca cable) video cable will look almost as good
