The RAM mybe be faulty or incompatible/wrong type for your computer.
Check the specification of the RAM that is required for your computer.
If you want to install 2 off 512 Mb RAM make sure the are the same make and model.

Simple test - leave only the 512 stick and go into the BIOS and see if the memory is correctly recognized. If it isn't then it's defective. If it is then download, burn and boot from
http://www.pclinuxos.com/
and run the memtest to be sure. If the memory is ok then you will have to reinstall Windows - it doesn't like the new memory.

Your bios may need to be flashed so your motherboard with recognize the ram. It also may be fixed by adjusting the speed of the ram in your bios settings. Be carefull and read about doing both of these procedured in your mainboard manual( should be able to get a manual from the compaq site if you do not have one). You can mess up your computer real good if things are set or flashed wrong. Good Luck

Change ram from 512 to 1 gig bios cannot read added ram

The original 2 sticks of 256 Mb of RAM gives you a total of 512
Mb of RAM. Two 512 Mb of RAM gives you a total of 1 Gb of RAM.
With two sticks of 512 Mb of RAM are you sure you got a total of 192 Mb of RAM, this is a lot less than the original RAM total of 512 Mb?
Should this be 1920 Mb of RAM?
If this 192 Mb is correct then the RAM modules are either not compatible with the laptop or if the RAM modules are not from the same manufacturer then they may not work together.

Most laptops have video cards that use part of the main RAM for video RAM, that is why the available RAM is less than the installed RAM modules. The amount of RAM the video card grabs depends upon the type of video card and in some cases the amount of video RAM can controlled in the BIOS setting.

RESETTING BIOs to recognize my RAM. I HAVE 512 BUT SYSTEM IS ONLY RECOGNIZING 256

if you load bios defaults does this help . . . clean both the dims and sims and blow out the ram slots . . . what kind of ram are you using ( are they an origanal pair eg your not mixing two differant types of ram as this can cause this problem as they can run and differant speeds)

New 1gb RAM, sys. only reading 478mb.

Although you have 1 Gb of RAM installed, I'm guessing you have two 512 Mb of RAM installed, it appears that only one RAM module is working.
Go into the BIOS and check if the BIOS sees 1Gb of RAM.
If it sees only 512Mb then swap the RAM modules around in the memory slots and check the BIOS again. If this doesn't work just install a single memory module at a time to determine which is the faulty memory module.

Toshiba Satellite Pro M15-S405 Memory upgrade problem

This usually happens when the laptop is not able to take more then a certain amount of memory, as the system BIOS does not support higher. By saying ACPI as the blue screen, that tells me that the power subsystem does not 'like' having more then 512MB of RAM. I am 95% sure this is your BIOS because of that information. Check and see if you can find a BIOS upgrade for your computer model, and that might fix the issue, if an update is available.

RAM Recognition 835GM PC Desktop

the memory is dual channel, so you have to use matched memory for it to work 1gig in each slot if possible, check the 1 gigs and 512's to see if they run at the same bus speed, if they are not matched there is your problem try a gig and a 512 in slot 0 to see if it picks the memory up, also there is sometimes an option in the bios to dissable dual mode
