Re: Shrinked

This is the maxtor 4 installation utility: Overview: MaxBlast 4 is a one-step, ATA/IDE hard drive installation utility. MaxBlast 4 makes hard drive installations and upgrades hassle-free for novices and professionals alike by automatically identifying, partitioning, and formatting any Maxtor ATA or SATA hard drive, making it data-ready in minutes. MaxBlast 4 replaces all previous versions of MaxBlast and MaxBlast Plus. Powermax 4.23: Overview: The PowerMax utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor and Quantum hard drives. These tests will determine hard drive integrity. The PowerMax utility is effective on all ATA (IDE) hard drives with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 MB. Maxtor recommends the use of this utility for troubleshooting potential hard drive problems. These problems include, but are not limited to the following: * Potential hard drive surface problems (e.g., bad clusters, bad sectors, partitioning/formatting problems, etc.). * Drive recognition problems (e.g. hard drive that is not recognized by the operating system). * Software removal.

Hardrive is unknown device in bios

The BIOS determines the maximum size hard disk the computer can support.
The max hard disk size for this model Dell is 80Gb.
To use your 250Gb hard drive, install this Hard drive into an USB hard drive case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

I think that your disk-drive is "SLIGHTLY" dead. :-(

Disassemble the enclosure.

Get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.

Access Maxtor's web-site, and check the warranty-status of the disk.

If the warranty still is valid, Maxtor will replace the disk-drive, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has ended, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it into the enclosure, to "reconstitute" your external storage-device.

This could be an issue with the circuit board.I am facing a similar problem & shown it for repairing. And facing issue in sourcing the IC. Seagate is giving support for maxtor after it has taken over. Data recovery is possible only if the circuit is working.

sounds like you need a new hardrive, i would reccomend getting a replacement drive and then hooking up the dead/dying hardrive up as slave to recover what you can, disabling S.M.A.R.T might get you to a situation where you can get what you need and then bin the drive

Plug it into a friend's computer (in the same cables as his main drive) (Turn the system off and pull the plug out first!) Tell us if it works there.

Data loss happens all the time for various reasons. That's why you need to learn how to use a CD burning program to transfer the pictures to CD's. If you don't want to burn often, get yourself a 16GB little flash drive at least.
