None of my media players work properly. stops responding after about an half an hour, that includes powerdvd rx, vlc, window media player

Not being high=tech, I may not describe properly. I have noticed my laptop responds slowly the greater portion of the time. Don't know if that is coincidence or not. I will watch a dvd on powerdvd dx, and after about l/2 hour, it stutters, then eventually freezes and the only way I can get out is to eject the disk with key for that purpose on keyboard. I tried to finish watching on the house's main big screen tv, and I got the message DISK ERROR, PLAYBACK OPTION (NOT SURE IF THAT WAS THE WORD) MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE. EJECT DISK. So, now what????

Honesty is the best policy...

I have experienced nothing but heartache with PowerDVD... from a software standpoint, I would suggest using a different app all together (PowerDVD takes up so much RAM, and not very user friendly) Have you tried using the simple Windows Media Player? Download and install the K-Lite Codec pack first (I understand you are wanting to view from disks, but it can't hurt to have all codecs up-to-date), which will handle almost any format that comes your way (you can find the free download here:

http://www.codecguide.com/

If the hardware is new, uninstall the drivers and instead of using the provided software (which may be the problem) simply allow Windows to discover new hardware, and install a basic driver for you. You can then go to Window's Update and update the hardware driver to-date.

The result should be a functioning drive, with a functioning app to view with :)

If you are interested in also burning, keep in mind to keep the optics clean, and their are PLENTY of better apps than PowerDVD out there (DVDFab is one of the best for ease of use to burn custom or entire disks).

Again, just coming from a former PowerDVD user, I hope this helps!

Will not play dvds

LOL, wow that's an oddity, normally it's the other way around where it plays store bought but not burned. Make sure you are not trying to play Blue Ray in a Regular DvD Player.

Oh, one more real important point. If you're using Windows Media Player as the player, that might be your problem. Media Player cannot handle all types of media devices and sometimes they don't give you a message saying anything because it just don't recognize a disc is even in the drive.

Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "Download VLC Player" (without the quotes). Look for the site www.videolan.org/vlc in the search results and click it. That's where you want to download it from. VLC is an open source player that will play any type of video format. It is far greater than Windows Media Player. It installs in less than 3 minutes and it is fast and smooth. You'll love it. After you install it put your cd in the drive and you will probably be prompted as to which player to play it with. Click VLC. If VLC is not shown as one of the listed players chose the option to browse to chose it. Now after all this, if you still can't play the dvd, then your drive is faulty.

Bought a dvd but can not watch it as my windows media can not decode it i bought it in tesco

You have 2 options here:

1) Use another program, as already mentioned such as VLC - which I find covers just about everything.

2) Get a DVD program such as PowerDVD - but you could just use VLC which is free.

I would recommend VLC as it is free and plays just about anything. It is also extremely easy to use. You can get VLC from here and you can purchase PowerDVD from here

Some videofiles are playing with violet and green colours! What can I do to fix it? I use Media Player Classic and latest version of k-lite codec pack. Thanks!

I would recommend downloading and installing VLC Media Player.

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player>
"VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols."

It's an excellent player, and can play almost any video file you have.

To download go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and follow the instructions there.

I haven't got a manual.I cant use it. J

I assume you would like to play a DVD on Windows XP and it does not work.

Windows XP does not contain DVD player software out of the box. You need to install third party software for this. Commercially available programs include "WinDVD" (Corel) or "PowerDVD" (InterVideo).
A free alternative is VLC, available here: http://www.videolan.org/

You do not need a manual or special driver for your DVD drive; DVD drives share a common interface and work with Windows using a generic driver.

Cannot play dvds. says my Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

Chances are you need the proper codec to run the DVD. Software companies often write their own 'interpreter' software to read the format they use to encode videos/music files.

Trying doing a search on the internet for the type of file format Windows Media Player is trying to run, then look for the codec for that format. Unless the format is copyright protected, Microsoft should have the codec available on their website.
