How do I Change from default language back to English?

The menu is in Japanese and i can not understand it, which resulted, in some instances, erased files. Example, ALL the recorded voice files were erased when i plugged the cable in the usb port of the desktop to download the recorded files! I can't understand the commands because it is all in Japanese! I definitely did not push or even TOUCH the erase button but those files were all gone...Now, i just wanted to change the default language back to English for better understanding and manipulation of the recorder. Thanks!

I have the exact same problem... My DM-20 keeps reverting back to Japanese, and I do not understand a word! It is causing problems, and the manual does not indicate how to change it back! Right now... I am seriously considering tossing it out the window, but will be patient and wait for a solution! Please help!

To reset the settings back to English:

1. Set the DM-20 to Voice mode using the blue switch on the back voice recorder.
2. Remove the DM-20 from Hold using the gray switch on the back of the voice recorder.
3. Press and hold the DISPLAY/MENU button on the front of the DM-20 for at least 3 seconds. The menu list is displayed.
4. Click the REWIND button six times to highlight the Format menu item.
5. Click the PLAY button to select the Format menu item. A message will be displayed with Cancel and Start options.
6. Click the REWIND button once to highlight Start.
7. Click the PLAY to select Start. A message stating that the data will be cleared will display briefly. Then a message asking if you are sure will be displayed.
8. Click the REWIND button once to highlight the Start menu item to continue with the format.
9. Click the PLAY select the Start menu item and begin the format. The format progress bar will appear. When it is complete the menu items will be in the English language.

TURN OFF LOCK. I AM IN MENU MODE, BUT WHERE IS THE ON/OFF BUTTON LOCATED?

Power on…Turn the POWER switch ON.
If the POWER switch on the backside of this recorder is
turned OFF, it is not possible to use any of the functions.
Turn the POWER switch ON before operation.
Power off…Turn the POWER switch OFF.
Standby Mode and Display Shut Off
If the recorder is stopped for 5 minutes or longer during recording or playing, it goes into
Standby (power-save) mode, and the display shuts off. To exit Standby mode and turn on
the display, press any button.
Locking a file keeps important data from being accidentally erased.
Locked files are not erased when you choose to erase all files from a folder.
In Menu mode selection... On, OFF
On: Locks the file and prevents it from being erased.
OFF: Unlocks the file and allows it to be erased.

I have An ERR code. How can I get rid of it without deleting all the files??

The ERR message can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in ALL the material on the recorder being erased. It will say (FOR) for a few minutes while it is erasing everything, then will work again.

Sony tape recorder- ICD-B310F there is no erase button, how do you erase messages

I have the same recorder (Sony ICD B310F) and in playing around with the buttons, I figured out how to ERASE THEM!!!

Go to the file you want to erase
Hold down the menu button (have to do this the entire time ) until you see the word "MODE"
While holding the menu button, press the forward arrow (like FF) and scroll until you see the word "ERASE"
Still holding down the menu button, press the play button.
Your file number will blink along w/ the word "ERASE", press the play button.

You should notice your file numbers decreased by one file. You have successfully erased the file.
