How to clean a 308054001 Homelite mighty mite carburetor

I recently replaced the ignition coil on my mighty mite weed wacker due to no spark and I measured the coil resistance of the original one and it was in the mega ohm range, (the new one reads around 360 ohms) I now have a bright blue spark but it still will not start, I expect the carburator and it is a OEM Part - Manufacturer #308054001 and need assiatance on how ot disassemble and clean/toubleshoot kind regards Graham

Empty gas tank, and remove spark plug wire from spark plug.
Remove plastic shroud around carb. Remove fuel lines from carb. Be sure to note which one goes where (this is important)
I take pics before i dissassemble anything for reff. later if needed.
Remove carb from engine, dont loose gasket between carb and engine. With carb in hand and a clean work bench remove the screws on the one side of carb. **Be careful, One side will have a small pin and spring/ needle, You will need to remove the tiny screw holding that assembly in, you dont want to loose them, also again note they way they are assembled, then gently lift up on the pin/arm and remove them, put them aside. The other side of the carb will might require you removing the fuel bulb if it is attached to the carb body, go ahead and remove this. If the fuel bulb is not located on the carb, undo the 4 screws and remove the cover being gentle, **Do not pry or pull the rubber gasket away from the cover, you'll damage it, also you will see what appears to be a plastic sheet, leave that also. Put this aside for now.
You now have the carb open, and easiest thing to do is get a can of "carb cleaner" and use the little red tube that comes with the cleaner to go in and out of all the holes in the carb as you spray. ***BE Careful, some of those holes will point back at you, and you could get it in the face...Hmm maybe wear eye protection incase.
You will also see in one of the larger holes a screen mesh "filter" dont pull it out, you'll only damage it and allow dirt into your system after. (unless you have a full rebuilt kit with a new one in it). Spray carb cleaner into air intake also. once you are satisfied with the carb body, go back and gently clean the Needle/spring/pin assembly and then return them to the carb, and tighten with the tiny screw. Gently wipe the gasket/cover with carb cleaner, and then wipe it off. Reassemble cover.
do the same for otherside of carb, be gentle on the "plastic" reed switches attached to thegasket/cover on this side, I would only gently wipe them and then replace the cover. Re-assemble everyting. Congratulations you just did a carb job. **Note any gaskets/diapraghms/reed switches that are torn or missing will need to be replaced with a proper rebuild kit.

Testimonial: "Hi Kevin, I removed and cleaned the carburetor as you suggested including removing the float and needel assembly held in by the small philips head screw, blew out all the ports and orfices with compressed air. I then removed the primer layer off the top plate and attempted to remove an orange rubber plug with a small hole in center, unfortunately the plug stem tore off the rubber head and I have ended up ordering a new carb?! On a related subject the weed wacker was working fine and then suddenly died which led to diagnosing a bad ignition coil due to no spark (inclduing trying another spark plug. Is it coincedence that the carburetor would also fail or am I missing something else? kind regards Graham "

So just to be clear, you replaced the carb with new, and it worked ok? and then you got a ignition coil

    Issue?

  • Anonymous Aug 24, 2012

but it still did not start so I then diassembeld and cleaned the carb but damaged the one way rubber valave directly belwo the primer bulb, so orderd a new carb which I installed but alas still woudl not start. I then checked the compression and it is around 50psi which according to my research is well belwo the receommned 110 psi. I want to put some sae30 down the plug hole and see if it is the piston rings kind regards

SOURCE: istuctions for fuel line installation on weed wacker

The esiest way to figure it out is to take the line with the filter and put it on one nipple then push on the primer a few times and see if fuel comes out of the other, if no fuel then switch the line over to the other. But if im not mistaken the filter will go to the bottom.

SOURCE: weed eater won't start. changed spark plug,

possibly on/off switch-has it gotten wet? Also check where wiring from on/off switch meets the wiring from the weedeater body.Check those connectors/crimps make sure theyre plugged in /right fit and not wet.Make sure youre ground wire is grounded/attatched/screwed to the machine.Ive had a weedeater get wet twice at the on/off switch and had to bring it in the A.C. overnight to really dry out.It worked.Hope this helps. If none of this does then its maybe the coil(semi-internal-no fun) or the fat wire carrying the spark from the plug to the body(semi-internal-no fun).Good luck!

What powers carburetor solenoid on a craftsman model 316.711200 weed wacker

The power source comes from the ignition module(coil), Power is stepped down internally in ignition module to something between 9v and 18v(can't remember exact voltage for sure at this time).

I don't recall seeing one on that model go bad. usually it ends up being the carburetor. Or incorrect spark plug that is the culprit(If cylinder is O.K. and you have spark).

Hope this helps.

My weed wacker wont stay running .It starts and runs in choke and the next setting up ,but only 30 seconds to about 2 min.Does anyone have an idea why

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Make sure the small screen in the carb. is free of debris. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

My homelite weed wacker will only run in the choke position

Check the fuel lines for breaks/cracks. If they are o.k. then you will need to clean the carburetor. Disassemble the carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. Make sure the small screen in carb. is free of debris. Use a Den Tek Brush,(http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000V5MQ7Y/ref=asc_df_B000V5MQ7Y820727?smid=AKZ54EXMVZHXW&tag=dealt5228-20&linkCode=asn), to clean the small portals in carb. Reassemble and start.
NOTE: If your carburetor internal parts are more than 4 yrs. old, you may want to replace them. So buy a carb. kit.
