This is called "pincushion distortion" and the circuit that is supposed to correct it is not working. This is often due to solder connections to some parts failing because of heat. It may also be caused by component failure. It is a problem that is not difficult to correct once the bad connections are repaired or parts replaced, and the cost of a repair would be far less than replacement cost.

I own a Philips 34PW8502/37, The picture is hourglass shaped, the images "bow-in" on the left and right of the screen

You have an East/West error caused by an amplifier that "modifies" the frame pulse and modulates the line scan to compensate for a tupe that has not got a 90degree scan.
Follow the scan coil leads and there will be probable dry joints and the pcboard or a power IC that has failed.
Hope this helps but a service manual will be of great assistance to you.

Vertical hold

If the picture is in an hourglass shape this has nothing to do with vertical hold. Besides, on all these sets, the hold and parameters are all uPC controled through a firmware routine that is burned in to an EPROM.

It is obvious that there is a failed component somewhere because of the hour glass shape. The area of failure is most likely in the pin amp section. If the hourglass is from the sides, it would be horizontal pin. If it is top and bottom, the fault is in the vertical pin section.

A common cause is from a capacitor that has failed in the mentioned area. Sometimes it can be an IC or other type of component in the pin amp area, but not as often as failed capacitors.

You can take the set in to service the fault. I don't think you can fix this yourself unless you are trained in TV service and have the experience and setup to troubleshoot for the bad parts, and do this type of service.

Hourglass Picture

Pulling in from the sides usually results from poor regulation or width problems related to the horizontal circiut. These are not usually repaireable by a non technician.

Hi, It sounds like your TV has a Pincushion problem based on your post/description. There is a big chance that this is just a colder solder/loose connection but of course an on-site diagnosis would be better. Since this involve opening the unit and working on the electronics inside, I would suggest that you seek the services of a qualified TV professional.
