Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro-External 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hard drive will not power ON

My WD500GBPro has been working fine it seemed. Until it stopped running. It wouldnt power on. Tried several outlets. Tried a different power cord. NO lights. No action. The drive is still under warranty. WD said there was nothing more to do. Sent drive to third party approved data recovery company. Based on many conversations with them it seems the drive's power supply is bad. IS there a way to remove the drive from the casing, attach it to another power supply, move the data to a new drive, and be done with it? Is this something I can do on my own?

I have had my own experience with Western Digital and their policy is to not sell or provide parts in order to replace damaged parts in an otherwise functional device.

Your options would be to send it in to WD for a repair and strictly a repair. They may replace the power supply.

The other option is to buy a used/off-market case or power supply which matches your drive's supply.

I had a harddrive burn a hole through one of the interface chips on the bottom of the HD and was told there was no way I could get it repaired or recover the data as it was. However, I found an exact match for model and type of the drive and a near enough year to the one I had and exchanged the interface boards on the drive, and I'm using the drive today as my main boot disk.

All you need to do is replace the power supply. Try Ebay for your external drive model number, there may be cases with no drives which you could buy that have functioning power supplies, or power supplies alone.

If all else fails, you can do what I did - buy another, matching product, exchange the broken part from the new one you get with the old one, recover data, and swap the power supply back again, then send the old drive to WD for replacement. You can attempt to resell the RMA'd (returned to WD drive) on amazon/ebay and use the new one, or keep the new power supply in the old device and use it, and sell the drive out of the case, or keep the drive and use it. I expect the drive inside the external case should work as a normal drive.

Code 43 errors are nearly always caused by a driver issue. However, since you have tried the device in several different computers with the same result, I believe that your flash drive has gone bad or become damaged. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon problem with flash drives. Like any storage device on the computer, make sure you are backing up what is on your flash drive.

I hope this is helpful to you

I dont know how to summarize the problem.

It sounds like the hard drive is bad. You might be able to run chkdsk (or whatevers its called; check disk) to scan/fix errors if possible.

A different issue but:

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Everything seems to be fine, but

If you have tried it on several computers, then it seems there is something wrong with the HD or its cable. Are you able to use another USB cable with it to see if that fixes it? I'm assuming the power light is on, and you can hear the drive spinning?

I bought an external drive about 2 years back. It worked beautifully but close to a year after purchase stopped working. Being a technician, I removed the drive from the case and connected it inside my PC where it still works fine. The USB circuitry in the case had failed, not the drive, which was good for me.

Do a FULL POWER DOWN Reboot. and try a different USB outlet in the PC... same Laptop to see if it is in your PC that is causing the problem.
Note: Most of those Drives do stop unless they are connected to the PC... energy savings.
If that didnt work... you could have a failed drive. Seagate should help you do some diag if it is in warranty... typically 3 years.

My external hard drive won't turn on

Ok, this just happened to me, my western digital my book studio external drive was not booting up, i could hear the disk spinning, but it would then cut out and the light on the drive was never turning on. i called Western Digital customer support and found out that the proper way to connect a drive is to plug in the power cable FIRST then the data cable. Also, with the My Book Studio Edition you should never have to press the power button, the drive just turns on when you plug it in. Hope this helps somebody...

If the green light on your LaCie power supply does not light, you likely have a bad power supply. You can buy a new one from LaCie. If you are purchasing a new power supply from LaCie ask for the higher wattage unit. LaCie upgraded this a while back.
