Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
It wont open using the button or the main menu command to open it.
This solution is:
Tech Level: Med
Mechanical Reasoning: High
Tool Skill Level: Med
Total Time: 1 to 1/12 hours
You will need to remove the front bezel. This may require removing the sides of your console, looking for locking tabs seated in the metal frame that hold the bezel in place. This is where your mechanical reasoning come into play. You will need to ferret out the method to get the front bezel off, along with the sides.
After this, you need to extract the Drive. This may involve releases latches that hold the drive in place. Removing the power plug and data transfer cable . Be careful when removing these cables pull gently but firmly backwards from their seat.
Once you have the drive removed, you will want to remove the top of the drive, its cover, from the base unit. This will then expose the drive motor, drive belt and drive pulley that operate the drawer. You probably have one of these two scenarios:
a broken belt or slipped belt.
a shattered disc.
If you have a shattered disc, there will be shards everywhere. These things, discs, do not break in two. They shatter like glass and can be just as sharp. Remove all shards carefully and in this case, USE SAFETY GLASSES.
Hopefully you do not have a shattered disc but this is more common than you may imagine.
If you have a broken belt. You will need to replace it. You can often go to your local electronics store where they stock belts for VCRs and DVD players. Or, as I have done successfully, I've found O-rings at a hardware store that can suffice. These belts are measured differently than you may guess, they have their width diameter measured in the stretched position. That is if you were to insert two fingers in the belt or o ring and then stretch the belt across a ruler until its gently stretched wide. This is the belt length.
It can be a real Bear to get to and resolve this type of problem, especially when a replacement drive is usually less than $40. But your choice of what to pursue is dependent on your personality. There are plenty of people who love to tackle a do it yourself projcect like this and there are those who loth it. Its up to you.
A local PC tech can also do this for you and the fee won't scare you. So long as you stay away from repair depots like Geek Squad where they have to charge you a Bench Minimum that will scare you or have you pay a minimum for a tech to knock on your door. Your friendly neighborhood tech is probably your best bet.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, it is similar to the operations of a desktop computer's CD/DVD drive except for the front plate. Whereas the computer's DVD drive would have a small pinhole for the manual eject, the XBox has not out front hence the faceplate to be removed. Once removed, you can push with a narrow dull end tool on the square opening that will push the gear/lever/mechanism to partially eject the tray. Thereafter, you can simply pull it out.
Often the problem is a broken or loose belt.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
