Take the battery out, wait a few minutes, and put it back in. You may have just had a connection problem, also make sure you hit shut down, not sleep. Re-install the battery and reboot, let me know if that did the trick. Or we will go further.

I have Acer travelmate 4010 laptop >>>

Download a copy of Hiren's Boot CD from here and burn it on a disc: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
Upon start up you will get a menu similar to this one:

mariolands.png
Under advanced boot options boot from the one that suits your operatin system (XP or Vista or Windows 7). If it loads it means the bootmgr is corrupt, you can try to repair it with the Windows installation disc, instead of Install choose Repair.

Now, regarding the BIOS password, you will have to select Dos Boot CD and go to BIOS/CMOS menu and run Kill CMOS to wipe the BIOS completely or there are some utilities there that can reset just password. There re some other options too for reseting the password that you can read about here: http://www.fixya.com/support/r7229632-reset_or_remove_bios_password

Need to reset the bios on Travelmate 4010, as it has BIOS password and HDD password locked

To reset the BIOS password read the information from this link.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

I am trying to upgrade a TravelMate 4010 from XP to Windows 7. Everything except the video is working just fine but I can't get anything but a Standard VGA video driver so the max resolution is 1024x768...

Try the manufacturer of your graphics card for an updated driver. If they don't do one you could try a vista one and if that doesn't work try installing it as an admin in compatibility mode.

LCD is on...seems like backlight is not functional; when external monitor connected, boot-up and bios screen visible. After boot-up, screen goes to "power save" mode and will not return

Use the 'FN' key (blue coloured?) and one of the other blue-coloured keys to "toggle" the video:

1. LCD only
2. external monitor only
3. both LCD & external

After boot-up, Windows defaults to "LCD only", and so the external monitor goes to "sleep".
