Need an upgrade for EWR20V4

I need an upgrade to be able to use a higher speed dvd in my recorder. Will I be able to do this on my own? I am not very good at things like this. How and where can I purchase this?

Just called Emerson and was told that I would have to find 8X discs because there was no update to the 16X speed discs. Anyone have a solution to this? Kind of makes this unit obsolete, huh?

I updated my firmware a couple of years ago, which allowed me to use only up to 8x discs. they are getting hard to find as 16 x or higher are becoming more common. i just called them ref my own machine asking if they have a newer service pac. the answer is no, go to best by and get your supply of disks. not what i wanted to hear, but i'll try.
the service pac is easy to install. it comes on a dvd, you insert it and let it run. not much too it.

hope it helps

I have a firmware upgrade for the EWR20V4 but am awaiting a response from the manufacturer as to whether or not (and how) I should use it..
The problem on my unit is that it will not play certain episodes of a Season 1 TV series I purchased but will play a full length movie with no problem. I'll keep you posted. Possibly I can make a copy of the firmware upgrade and mail it to you. (Unknown if that's a legal thing or not at this point.)
Thanks
Mike

I can't get the DVD out of the player

Need a firmware upgrade. Emerson will charge you for it. Otherwise you need to find Dvds it will accept. Hard to do with all of the newer dvds. -RW only 1Xor 2X. -R 1X-2X. Memorex would not work for me. Multi- speed dvds over listed speeds will not work. Maxell -R 1X-4X worked for me. Good luck finding any.

I bought DVD's and to my understanding that i need

While it is true that not all dvd players will play, record, or even acknowledge some media I don't think you need a firmware.4X -16X is the max . write speed of the DVD disc. It should be OK with slower speed machines. What did you use before? Good Luck.

Recording dvd- i try to record and it says cannot record on this disk. its a blank -r/-rw disk.

Hi there, original firmware supports only dvd up to 4x. If you will try speed more than 4, recorder refuse them.
Try to insert 4 x DVD, note even 4 speed dvd will not work all - depends on brand.
There is new firmware available, you have to call customer service before upgrade, they will tell you everything about...
With new firmware you will be able to record all speed and type dvd...

Cannot record on 16X DVD-R

You will need to call Funai 1 800 605 8457 give them your brand / model number and expose your problem - they should be able to send you an upgrade disc but it will cost you -
If you want my advice - you DO NOT need a 16x disc inside a DVD recorder - the optical drives used on DVD recorders and even worse a Funai drive are quite bad as it is in terms of writing strats for higher speeds - you are better off recording at 8x on a 16x disc.this will provide better burns ( lower PIE/PIF errors and jitter %).

Emerson EWR20V4 -can't format discs for recording

mine says NB108. You may have the correct remote. make sure after you push setup that you use the lower set of arrows, not the ones beside the play/stop buttons. this should allow you to move over and push right arrow, moving you over the disk options allowing you to format and other options. i can't tell you how many times i've pushed the wrong arrow and thought something was the matter. additionally, you may only be allowed to use up to 8x recording speed disks. i've had mine awhile, and have had a service pack that allowed me to go from 4x speed to 8x speed. there is no service pac to allow you go higher on the dvd-r. i believe the highest you can use on the dvd-rw is 2x.
hope this helps

Dvd do not record

The unit is saying that its an "Un-format disc" problem. Is this the only error code you are getting? Also, what types of DVDs are being used? As in, DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD-RW and what speeds? 1x 2x 4x 8x 16x?
