yes, I have tried to mess with all of the knobs... I have lost the manual, so I don't really know or understand what the knobs are for.

    Here is what is happening...
The stitching looks fine on top... but the stitching on the bottom goes fine.. then a loop happens... then it goes fine, then loop happens.

it just looks horrible! I have it set on 5.. normal stitch.. 2 stitch length

Sounds like you are getting some skipped stitches. Have you tried changing your needle? You may want to make sure you are using a ball point, those help alot with skipped stitches.

Why is my machine skipping stitches

this is caused by uneven winding of the bobbin, sometimes the spool of thread winds unevenly when it travels up and down the spool. the best solution i have found is to use small spools of thread when winding the bobbins

I have been sewing great for the past week but today the bobbin stitch is LOOSE; top stitch looks normal. Have adjusted tension but too no avail. Thank you.

Rule of thumb..
Loops on the bottom ,problem is on the top.
Loops on the top, problem is on the bottom.
Tension should be set on the midway point making sure the thread is between the tension wheels.

Kenmore 15516 It only goes reverse both ways.

Does it have an automatic buttonhole? If so, is the pattern selector set on part of the buttonhole? set it to straight stitch or Zig Zag

No bobbin tension

If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on toip and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension)

Make sure your needle is in correctly...most machines are flat to the back except the really old ones.

Tons of loops on bottom

Check your threading.
Berhaps your thread is not between the discs.
