I too have the same problem and just had power steering pump replaced which did not fix the problem. They are now telling me its a problem in the steering column itself. What could this be and is it a result from a previous recall # 11253 issued in 2003?

Trans fluid and p/s fluid same thing thats fine. Did you fill fluid first before starting vehicle? These pumps burn up easily if run dry.

2004 ford freestar 4.2L engine...high pitched

this sounds odd but mine did this when i replaced the wipers. it seems the design of the wiper frame was making a whistle at higher speeds. the freestar wipers are exposed on the window cowl and not hidden so they endure the winds at high speed. it is worth a shot.

Orange fluid leak (most likely power steering fluid)

Check your hoses around your power steering resevoir, you might have a pin hole leake in one of the hoses. Make sure to keep an eye on the fluid level. As long as you keep fluid in it you won't burn out the pump.
