Thermostat control

  • The thermostat on a window air conditioner works by sensing the air temperature entering the air conditioner. As the air entering the unit reaches the set temperature it will cause the compressor to turn off. The blower may continue to run depending on the selection chosen on the control panel. Digital thermostats work on a similar principle but display a more precise temperature.

The fan control is the problem and will need to be replaced. First you should check for voltage at the fan. Also will it work manually? If so, then the cheaper option would be to run it manually for now if you don't want to replace the control unit. Let me know what you find. A volt meter can be bought from Radio Shack if you don't have one.

I have a carrier ac moddal 38HKC48DS3002 4 ton that will run for about 10 mintes before off the coppreser and than displing show E4

If unit displays "e4"

1? Check whether the winding resistance and
operation current of the compressor are normal.
2?Check whether the high and low pressure is normal
when the unit is running.
3?Check (whether the coil pipe sensor is normal)
whether the contact of the inserter on the circuit
board is well, the coil pipe temperature sensor is
fixed, the evaporation of the indoor unit is well,
the key is to check the evaporator temperature
detected by the coil pipe temperature sensor has
reached the cooling or heating temperature.
4?Check whether the surface of the condenser is too
dirty, it should be cleaned when it is too dirty.
5?Check whether the capacitance of the outdoor motor
and the fan is damaged, it should be replaced when
it is damaged.
6?If the above items are normal, the electric control
board should be replaced.

You need to check the wiring to the limits and safety devices with are in a number of locations, make sure all connections are tight. The most common cause for the blower to run is the high limit device which is the one mounted above the burners on the flat metal panel with two wires.

Fan on freezer won't com on but freezes food on

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
There are 12 midelos that fall under the model number you passed. I will cite EV171NYMQ05 as a reference model number via this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5140769

The freezer fan should be on anytime the compressor is on. If there is an ice block built up on the evaporator coils it can lock the fan blade in place via the ice build up. Additionally... if the fan motor bearings are dry or coated with sludge this too can prevent the fan motor from operating. The fan motor is item 3 this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5140769&diagram_id=28174432#d28174432

Detail views:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/whirlpool-motor-evap-item-number-ap4539455.aspx

To check the can motor all that is required is a simple continuity check across the 2 connector wires. You should read under 480 ohms.

If you discover that the fan blades are encased in ice... do a manual defrost: (be ready to tend to a water mess)
1. By first unplugging the unit and then removing the freezer contents.
2. Direct an external fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours.
3. Make sure the compartement drain funnel is clear of obstructions. Item 11 this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5140769&diagram_id=28158051#d28158051

After the 2 hour manual defrost period plug in the unit and test to see if the fan motor is running.
If it is running you may have an automatic defrost problem causing the ice build up. On a freezer the ice build up will start again if there is an automatic defrost problem in 3 - 5 days. Until the automatic defrost problem is corrected you will end up doing the manual defrost routine described above everytime you have improper cooling problems.

Components that can cause the automatic defrosting problems are
1. The defrost timer item 7 this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5140769&diagram_id=28257341#d28257341 Because it is not cycling or stuck in one position.
2. The defrost bi-metal thermostat item 9 above link (stuck closed)
3. The defrost heating element item 5 above link. (open)
And of course internal wiring....

Check the fan motor for continuity... if you attempt to lubricate it which is very difficult on this fan motor make sure you use paraffin based "Turbine oil" and not a regular household or automotive oil. Using any other oil will cause the fan to stop working in as little as 30 days.

Hi,
Sounds like you need to replace your evaporator blower motor capasiter, it is located on the houseing of your blower motor, easy to do , but be carfull, they hold a charge and can shock you.
remove the two wires and replace like for like, check operation. If problem still exists, you need to replace the blower motor.
This should help.

Burnig smell, then no cold air from blower

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

This is not what you want to hear but the symptom you describe is exactly what will happen if the evaporator fan motor winding fails. The question is.... did it just fail or.. was the evaporator blocked with ice due to an Automatic Defrosting Problem that resulted in a block of ice forming on the evaporator and locking the fan blades in place causing the fan winding to fail? They do just sometimes out right fail but, you have to consider all possibilites.

I can help you locate an evaporator fan replacement if you respond with your model number or you can go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com and do a MODEL search near the top right side of the page using your complete model number.

My fan motor on a carrier 38ycc024310 has been changed two times should i replace the heat pump or is there an electrical problem

Most Carrier units use smaller horsepower motors with less rpm.
If a universal motor was used that may be your problem.
Check the specs listed on the unit and replace with the correct motor.
Also replace the capacitor.

Showing a LP on display. What are the possible problems?

Here is the reason for that problem per the manufaturers web-site

http://www.haywardnet.com/products/Manuals/pdfs/Manual122.pdf

The low-pressure switch senses the refrigerant pressure in the sealed refrigeration system to

protect against certain conditions that could be detrimental to compressor life. The switch shuts

the unit down in the event of loss of refrigerant, fan motor failure, evaporator freeze-up and

airflow blockage. The switch automatically resets when the pressure rises to normal operating

pressures. The display will show "LP" if this switch is tripped.

Evaporator Freezing

The low-pressure switch will shut the heat pump down when the evaporator starts to freeze.

When the unit starts to freeze the low-pressure switch will be tripped, causing the display to read
"LP" This will prevent the evaporator from becoming damaged or deformed.

If the air outside the heat pump is not warm enough to produce heat, the system will shut down.

The actual point at which your unit will shut down due to low temperature varies depending on

which model you purchased, current weather conditions, and the amount of sunlight reaching the

heat pump. The shutdown can occur anywhere within a wide range of temperatures, usually 45°F-

55°F. This is not a "fixed" range. We stress that climate conditions, sunlight, and various models

respond quite differently to low ambient temperature. A shutdown occurs because low

temperatures will activate the systems low-pressure safeguard switch (digital thermostats will

display a code "LP".) The unit will start up again when the temperature has raised enough to reset

this switch. Note: Low ambient temperature does not necessarily affect the Chiller models
or the cooling cycle of the heat/cool units.

From time to time stops working and making a noise like boling water

A refrigerator must defrost 2 - 3 times a day. It does this via the automatic defrost cycle. When the cycle starts alll motors shut off and there is a heating element that is in the evaporator / freezer section of your unit. That heating element melts the ice until the 60 Deg F bi-metal thermostat cycles and terminated the automatic defrost cycle. During the defrost cycle is is normal to hear a hissing sound as the melting ice drips on the heating element assy. Addiionally you may hear coolant gurgles as the unit shuts off to start the defrost cycle and the coolant system equalizes the internal pressures between the pressure and return lines. Again another normal sound. If your unit did not stop to defrost 2 - 3 times a day in a matter of 3 to 4 days you would have a large block of ice in the back of your freezer section and the evaporator fan blades would be hitting that ice block. The freezer would say cool yet probably no longer make ice. Also the fresh food compartment would start warming up. Hopefully this resolves your concerns. If you need more assistance just respond to this post and I will help you.
