POwer supply failure

WD elements 500gig external drive. Worked fine since purchase but power supply has now failed. this drive was my main backup and contains sensitive data. PC World cannot obtain a new power supply but will exchange the drive under warranty. I cannot exchange unless I wipe the drive. Is there anywhere in the UK I can obtain a part?

I have the same deal , I ahve over 320Gb of business data scanned contracts etc and now the power AC adapter has failed and here I sit, big problem. The electrical engineering firms wont even make a cable for me to just get the data off of the drive - as you can imagine this data is worth much more than the drive itself. They have offered me a replacement drive but cant get the info off for me...what help is that?

I bought 3 off and 1 started slowing failing by reporting format errors, but changing power supply fixes it...didn't last 3 months and yes I will be taking it back under warranty

happened to me with my 320gb WD elements. The ac adapter has a green light on it but it just stopped lighting up, im sure that i just need to replace the adapter but where should i turn to for this???  btw im in Perth.

My two most recent WD external drives (a 320Gb and a 640Gb) have both done this during the warranty period. One AC adapter failed after 10 months, the next one after 6 months. I think they're using crappy capacitors in them or something. The drives and enclosures themselves are fine.

Hi John,

Had the same problem with a WD Elements 320 GB drive, and found a WD customer service number. They are sending me a FREE replacement. I have put the details on a message somewhere on this site, but can't direct you to it.

The number from Australia is : 1800 429 861 ( routed to Singapore )

Email Address : Western Digital Customer Service . CustomerService@wdc.com

Send them details of your mailing address, drive model and serial number, and a description of your power supply. ( my power supply had a model number moulded on the back )

Hope this helps

An alternative: Take the case apart, extract the hard drive, and plug it in to any PC with a compatible HD controller. I have a 500GB Elements external drive, and it's a standard SATA drive. You could also buy a SATA to USB adapter, typically around $20 in the Colonies. That's a nice thing to have on hand in any case.

Just noticed the date on the OP, so this is probably too late for you, but probably not too late for others who have these things just waiting to break.

Happened to me too. The pins on the power supply break easily. Search the ac adapter model number. should be DA-30C01 or something. can find it for sale on the net somewhere under model name.

Mine went also, on the 20 Jan. Same as you, all business software and I forgot to back up the data - lesson learned I hope.
I ordered a new drive from Maplins and it came this morning, just the power supply gone, all my info is now recovered and backed up.

Unplug the power supply from the hard drive, leave for 15 seconds.

Plug power supply back in.

Try another USB cable if that does not work.

Elements by WD, AC Adapter Failed

There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.

One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.

I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

Any place to purchase a power supply for a WD element??

If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.

If not they will sell you another one.

A replacement or extra power supply for your external drive can be purchased from our phone support team by calling 1-800-275-4932. Any technical support representative will be able to sell this part. Please have the serial number or model number of the hard drive ready, as this is needed to determine the correct adaptor type for the hard drive.

I hope this helps,

My WD Elements 640GB Wont turn on.

I had the same problem. I fixed this by leaving the power supply connected with the wall socket for about 15 minutes, without connecting it to the external hdd. After that I connected the power supply with the external hdd and it worked perfectly. I hope this helps for you too!

No power to external harddrive

Yes, without a doubt!

I highly recommend sending it back for repairs or replacement. Most are covered under a 6 month warranty depending on the deal, and the country you are in as well. And computer shops don't generally fix things like External Drives, since they are not as a important part of a PC, but as a backup or storage device.

Good luck mate.
