Question about Fisher and Paykel GWL11 Top Load Washer

Open Question

GWL 10 US will not agitate

Machine appears to proceed through the cycles but just spins very slowly instead of agitating. It will not pump out water when it gets to the spin cycle. The pump works fine when activated from the diagnostic mode. After completing the diagnostic mode sequence, there is no fault code shown on the LED's. Help!

Does the water drain out of the machine when you run the pump in diagnostics or does it recirculate back into the tub? Let me know, I will be happy to provide more insight.

SOURCE: Agitator moves slowly on wash cycle/not at all on spin cycle

it sounds like the dogs are worn. try twisting the agitator post by hand,it should move freely in one direction then lock up going the other.its a pretty easy fix if they are.pry off the top of the agitator post off then remove the cap inside, there is a bolt that holds the post down.i'm pretty sure it's 7/16 in. once the bolt is loose, lift the whole agitator out of machine and with your hand inside post turn it upside downand let the dog holder slide out.watch how the dogs fit into the holder, replace with new dogs and reverse the removal process.
if the machine wont spin, check the lid switch. thats usually the cause of a no spin situation.other than that a wet vac is your best bet.hope that helps.

SOURCE: the agitator doesn't seem to agitate the clothes enough

If your washer doesn't agitate, check these:

Lid switch
Motor coupler
Belts
Clutch
Drive motor
Drive pulleys
Transmission
Agitator
Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it.

Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

Clutch If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley.

Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems:

  • Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all.

  • The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem.

If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

Agitator The inside of the agitator--where the transmission shaft attaches--can become worn, and strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back and forth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly. If this happens, you may need to replace the agitator and/or the transmission spline.

Hi just read your posting. Now bail some of the water out by hand with a pot or small bucket so you can lean the machine back far enough to look underneath the machine without it leaking everywhere. Now when are looking underneath the machine look to the front right and you should see a red or black fan,This is your pump.Turn the fan clockwise and anticlockwise a few times to loosen the pump if any thing is jammed. The fan should spin freely. Now put the machine back on its feet and select a spin cycle and hopefully the machine starts to drain. Please reply to tell me how you got on or if the machine is still not draining or you have the other type of pump.Good luck.

The machine runs but won't spin.

Does water remain in the machine at the end of the wash cycle? Does the water pump run when it is supposed to? If not, the pump may be jammed with debris or the motor is defective. Can you drain the water by lowering the drain hose to floor level and into a bucket or pan? Does this allow the spin cycle to proceed? It is normal for the machine to test for spin balance (it will agitate further if it is not balanced). Hope some of this helps!

Washer fills with water but then nothing, put on spin cycle water empties. The agitator does nothing

the agitator is not on properly due to worn parts under it. remove the top cap, then use needlenose to remove the cap underneath it. lift up from very bottom of agitator. look for worn areas

Agitator will not agitate. Also water trickles in instead of flowing in like a tap turned on. Also water leaking under from pipe that goes into plastic component - looking from back of machine bottom...

  • the agitator has a set screw in the side of it about half way down. this may have rusted out or fallen out.
  • the transmissions may be failing (unlikely)
  • the water inlet valves (where you connect the hoses to the washer) have screens in them, they might be clogged causing the water to slowly drip in.
  • the water leak is most likely caused by a rusted clamp loosing its pressure on the hose.
  • the plastic component is the water pump
  • it might be time for a new washer
