What are the common problems with Apple OSX Mountain Lion?

I'm interested in getting the new Mountain Lion to use with my Apple iPhone and Macbook Air but want to hear from people who have already downloaded it. Is it worth the price of admission or just another update that I can do without?

Hello Patrick,

The most common problems I've experienced with Mountain Lion are the following:

  • Reduced battery life. I've noticed about an hour to an hour and a half cut off from my battery life of my Macbook Pro. I'm not sure if this applies to you since you have a Macbook Air, but my recommendation is to try a reinstall if you experience battery problems and turn off some of the extra features like Twitter integration and iCloud when you're not using them.
  • Safari is crashing. Safari is a browser that used to have little respect but now has actually gotten pretty decent. However, with Mountain Lion it actually crashes a lot more than usual. I don't have a fix for it offhand, but I would recommend just using Chrome (which I use anyways) or Firefox. And stay away from Explorer!
  • Free upgrades to Mountain Lion. When I got my free upgrade to Mountain Lion (if you purchased a Mac after June 11, 2012 you can get one too) it took Apple about 5 days to upgrade me to Mountain Lion. This is a super low priority problem, but it's still something I hope they're working on.
  • Notes synchronization. I have answered this on FixYa already, you can find it on the site.

Best of luck.

Firewire not recognised when connected to mountain lion

Mountain Lion and Lion do not recognize anything that was created under the power pc architecture. If you're connecting an older drive with power pc programs (G5 and before), then you'll have problems.

I need a driver for my new Mountain Lion, Mac, to run the 9800XL

Microtek sent me this link to ScanPotter 1.07:
http://support.microtek.com/downloads/drv_specific.phtml?slct_os=9&prod=139&bymdlnme=1

It's not the same ScanWizard Pro software that used to work on my PowerPC G5 running OSX 10.5 Leopard, but at least it enables me to use my ScanMaker 9800XL with my late 2011 17" MacBookPro and OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. Get it, it works!

Underwent an issue with my iPhone and lost all my data. How do I access the backup?

You would have had to add your iCloud account details when you configured your iPhone to enable the backup. To check that your data exists, go to the following URL and login:
iCloud

Here you should be able to see your data.

Assuming it has been backed up, go to your Apple computer "System Preferences" -> "iCloud" and select the data that you would like to keep in sync.

Can I integrate Apple's new Mountain Lion with Twitter?

You can add your Twitter account, by visiting the System Preferences and the selecting Mail, Contacts, & Calendars. Once viewing this screen click the small + at the bottom of the left column. This will show you what types of accounts you can add.

Twitter is an option, just click, enter your twitter credentials and you should be off to the races and tweeting from Mountain Lion!

Hope that helps!

How do I use iCloud on the new OS X Mountain Lion?

All you do is go into "System Preferences" and then click on "iCloud". From there you will be able to activate your account and proceed.

Please note that you will have to set up an @me.com email address from Apple. Without this you will not be able to sync between devices like you wish to do.

How much does Mountain Lion cost to download?

You can download Mountain Lion by going to the Apple Store. It costs $20 to get.

However, if you purchased your new computer after June 11, 2012 (which your question seems to indicate you did) then it will not cost you anything and will be completely free.

Go to this webpage and enter in your details to get your free copy.

What are the requirements to download Apple Mountain Lion OSX?

You must have the following computer to download Mountain Lion:

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)

Once that is done, you must be updated to the most recent version of either Snow Leopard or Lion. If you don't have either of these operating systems (which is highly unlikely considering the other computers should have them, but I digress) then you will need to get them before Mountain Lion.

After that, go to the Apple Store and download Mountain Lion!

How do I sync Notes with my Mac laptop and my iPhone using Mountain Lion?

Hi Rachel,

In order to sync your Notes between your Apple devices, please use the following steps:
  • Go to your iCloud settings and sign up for an @me.com email address.
  • Once you have an @me.com email address, write a note in the Notes app on your iPhone.
  • Go to the iCloud website and open up the "Mail" application
  • Underneath all of your email folders (Inbox, Sent, etc.) there should be a folder called "Notes"
  • Open that folder and read your note!
