Question about Aprilaire 700 Humidifier

Water feed tube and nozzel seems to plug

I have a 760 humidifier. The water feed tube and nozzel seems to get blocked after a short period of operation and won't fill the evaporator tray. When I disconnect the tube from the solenoid the line drains and then will operate until the furnace shuts off. Then it plugs again. I have tried operating without the nozzel and even replaced the entire feed tube and nozzel with a new one but that didn't solve the problem.

Yes I do have hard water but line is connected to our hot water and we use a water softener. The inline strainer is installed and appears to be okay. Water exits the solenoid at the connection for the feed tube but after running for a short period the tube appears to be blocked. Simply disconnecting the feed tube from the solenoid and reconnecting will solve the problem but only for a short while. I replaced the original feed tube and nozzel with a new one and after a day or so it started acting up as well. Wondering if I could remove the pressure plug on the feed tube if that is what is getting pluged up due to hard water.

The plumbing is copper from the water heater to the unit

Do you have hard water, and is the inline strainer at the inlet installed and clean? Steve

What type of plumbing do you have? Galvanized, copper or pvc?

Ok, thats good. I would recommend removing the humidifier shut off valve. Turn off the water to the house after the water meter. remove the feed line from the humidifier supply valve. If it is a self piercing valve (this type of valve is mounted on a brass strap that crosses the copper pipe, with a screw on each side remove the 2 screws, and remove the valve. have a bucket handy. If the valve is threaded in remove with a wrench. after the valve is removed have someone slowly turn on the main water part way for a minute or 2 to try to flush any residue from the pipe. Then reassemble and retry. If this is a self piercing valve, there will be about an 1/8' hole in the copper pipe. You will have to close the saddle valve and make sure you insert the piercing needle back into the 1/8' hole. If its a threaded valve make sure to use teflon tape or pipe/plumbers dope before reinstalling. Let me know. Steve

Aprilaire 550 Changed the water panel and the water distribution panel. There is a little u-shaped cradle for the feed tube. But the feed tube is not secure and sprouts water everywhere. Now what?

On the water distribution panel there is an "L" shaped nozzle that the water hose plugs into, this directs the water into the top of the distribution panel. Your's is obviously missing. Look for this part on the parts you removed.

Have aprilaire #760 ,changed water panel, and turned furnace on and water started pouring out of the bottom of furnce? lots of water---

Typically, we find that the most common reason that you start to see leaking from the humidifier is that the water panel is not changed frequently enough. We do recommend that the water panel be changed once every humidifying season. We find a majority of our customers do this maintenance typically at the start of the humidifying season.

Here are the things to check when troubleshooting a power humidifier, which is leaking:

1.Position Of Unit On Plenum
Is the unit level (let to right)?
Is it plumb (front to back)?

2.Feed Tube
Is the Feed Tube tightened or is there a crack in the tube?

3.Position Of Scale control insert-
Is the base of the scale control insert sitting firmly in the drain spud at the base of the housing?
Does the bottom of the scale control insert have a taper to it to direct water to the drain spud?
Is the Scale control insert positioned correctly? The scale control insert has a front and a back. The back of the water distribution tray has an indentation in it to allow for clearance of the nozzle, which is attached to the top of the base. If reversed, and forced into place, the water distribution tray will break off the nozzle attached to the water feed tube and potentially the housing, causing water to leak

4.Water Panel Assembly-
Are there aluminum strands hanging out of the scale control insert?
Is there a gap between the top of the water panel and the water distribution tray for air to go through?
Is the colored dot on the water panel, up?
Is there a consistent coating on the Water panel, or are there shinny spots or clumps of coating?

5.Water Entrainment (Water Blowing out of the Humidifier)-
Are there signs of entrainment? Mineral build-up on fan blade, shroud, inside of cover?
Is the static pressure in the plenum over .4w.c.? If so, entrainment and leaking could occur.

6.Missing Orifice
If there is no orifice in the unit, the water entering the system could flood the panel. To check
for proper water flow, a quart jar should fill at the drain line in about 2 ½ minutes for a red or blue orifice, 5 minutes for a white or yellow orifice.

7.Drain line-
Is the drain line plugged?
Does it have a good downward slope?
Is it teed with any other drain lines?

If the above items do not resolve the existing leaking we would recommend contacting the customer service line at 800-334-6011 for further technical support.

How do I know my aprilair 760 humidifier is working?

A simple check you can perform on your aprilaire 760 is the following:
1) locate the two brown wires coming out of the 760 (these wires will be wired to tell the 760 to turn on when the hvac bower is on and the humidistat is calling for moisture).
2) temprarily disconnect the two brown wires from the external wiring and then short the wires together. All you're doing here is bypassing the your thermostat and bower-on indicator.

With the 70 unit plugged in to the wall outlet and the two brown wires connected together, both the fan and the solenoid valve (water inlet valve) should both be activated.

My Aprilaire 700 does not seem to be working. The

you can bypass the humidistat by shorting the 2 brown wires on the bottom of the humidifier. just remove the 2 wire nuts and touch the 2 together (just 24v)if it comes on then there is a control problem with the humidistat or wiring if it doesnt come on the control board or transformer may be bad or you dont have 120v to the humidifier on the plug. also make sure your furnace blower is running cause the hum cant come on if its wired properly unless the fan is running. you also may want to go to www.aprilaire.com and get a maintenace kit from their online store. it comes with pad and new hose along with a couple other things.

Water runs when furnace is off, but stops when furnace is on.

the 760 humidifier does not need a transformer wired externally. the 760 has its' own 24v transformer inside the fan compartment. this transformer will provide the power to enrgize the water solenoid as needed. it sounds like to me the additional trasnformer is hot all the time. when the furnace comes on, the unit gets power and the internal transformer is cancelling the power from the external transformer. this would explain why it quits running when the heat is on. since the external transformer is hot all time, when the heat shuts off, the solenoid is getting energized by the external transformer. to make this run correctly, you need to get rid of the external transformer. leave the humidifier high voltage wires hooked up so they are only hot when the furnace runs. if you have a humidistat that has a r and c terminal, you will need to wire these directly to the r and c on the furnace control board and move the switch inside the humidistat to "power". make sure it is not on "bypass". then wire your 2 brown wires from the humidifier to each of the "h" terminals on the humidistat. if you have a humidistat that only has 2 terminals, wire one brown wire to each of the terminals. this should allow it to run properly.

Water is leaking from the bottom of the unit

The tune up kit that I ordered arrived on Friday and I installed most of it on Friday night. While it is nice to have a new frame and the distribution panel and I think the price of the whole kit was fair considering it comes with the parts and 2 water panels, the fix was really simple.

The kit came with the water distribution tube with with a new blue orifice (Aprilaire #4232) already inserted. This orifice is in the end of the plastic tube at the solenoid end. When I removed the old water distribution tube, the old orifice was not really dark blue anymore but kind of a light blue and was deteriorating from 12 years of exposure to the chemicals in the water. What should have been a pin-hole size opening in the orifice was up to about 2mm or a little more so the orifice was letting way too much water through.

If anyone else has this leaking problem, and your orifice is several years old, I would check that first. It is a $2.75 part and may be the cause of the leak. The whole feed tube kit is only $8.75 and includes the feed tube, nozzle, orifice, ferule, compression nut, strainer so if you need to replace the orifice, I would order the whole feed tube kit for a little bit more.

Hope this helps,
Roger...

Aprilair model 760 does not go on

If you replaced the solenoid yourself make sure that is a 24VAC some solenoid are 120VAC and they look the same. to see if your humidifier is working you can short the 2 control wires coming from the humidifier I think the wires are brown or oa range. if you put then together the hum. should come on if is pluged in, if not then check your outlet see if you have 120AC plug in a lamp to check the outlet, if not your hum.may have a bad power supply you can get one at www.AppliancePartsPros.com/Parts
