Thanks for your suggestion and information about buying a "repair kit" for my HP 4MV printer. Can you tell me approximately how often the paper "pick up rollers" have to be replaced? I read that this is one of the things included in the "repair kit". Although my printer is old, I really haven't used it too much over the years. I think I've only replaced the toner cartridge once or twice in all these years. So it's hard to believe that the "pick up rollers" could need replacing so soon. But perhaps they just don't last very long?

Re: Repair Kit for HP 4MV Printer - Pick Up Rollers
The ruber tyres on the pick rollers can harden with age, even if you are not using it. Try applying gum turpentine to rubber tyre with Q tip. This is used to keep a printer picking up untill replacemant rollers can be fitted.

Uninstall the printer, delete drivers, look if new drivers are available for it and reintall the printer. If problem continues my guess is that your printer is defective. Printers are made of chep plastic materials and after some use parts get worn out and break down. HP has a so called repair kit available for repair service. If your printer won't pick papaer, quite probably some of these partss is damaged. If you don't know how to repair printers aand dont have access to parts, take it to a repair service.
This maintenance kit consists of a fuser, pick up rollers, transfer rollers. On this model you can also reset the maintenance count by entering the service mode and sometimes by scrolling down to the config menu until you see resets.
Check* was paper physical length is matching to selected length? *check Maintenance kit interval. * check which tray you are getting this message? tray/tray 2 check pick up rollers are warn out? * clean paper path sensors.
Sounds like you need a paper pick up repair kit
Go to hp.com
support, put in your machine and something like repair paper rollers
And it will kick back a kit number.
Then go to the WEB, to one of the reseller or even ebay and put in the kit number and watch what happens.
They are about 10 bucks for the smaller printers, color could be more
To ensure optimum print quality, the printer will prompt you to perform printer maintenance every 150,000 pages. When the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE message appears on the control panel, you will need to purchase a printer maintenance kit and install the new parts. To check the number of pages the printer has printed, print a configuration page. To print a configuration page: 1 Press [Menu] until INFORMATION MENU appears. 2 Press [Item] until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears. 3 Press [Select] to print the configuration page. To order the printer maintenance kit, contact an HP authorized service or support provider. (See the telephone support flyer included with the printer.) The kit includes: • fuser assembly • transfer roller • feed rollers • necessary instructions For more information on installing the printer maintenance kit, see the instructions that accompany it.
