How do I fix a flat screen tv that powers down within seconds of powering up?

The ballast may be going out. That is the board that the lamp wires connect to.. The power supply board may have a few components starting to fail as well.

Dlp lamps burn out quickly

you may have an issue with the ballast module for this DLP tv, that module has the two large red wires that connect to the lamp socket. check the 47MFD 450V capacitor on this module. If swollen replace the part, but also check the large electrolytic capacitors, two of them on the power supply module, where you power cord attaches, one or both of these may be damaged if the 47 MFD on the ballast module has failed.
You will need soldering skills for this repair.
If the fans are ladden with dust, this could also cause premature lamp failure, these lamps require clear ventilation, overheating is the enemy!

I have sound on my tv but no picture

This sounds like the back-lights have quit working. This is made up with an inverter (ballast) and fluorescent lamps. I want you to try something. In a very dark room turn the tv on and watch what happens to the screen. There is three things that can happen. first the screen will stay completely black. This means the inverter never fired, and this is usually a failed inverter, but sometimes the power supply may fail. there is also a rare time the main module never outputted the signal to activate the inverter, but this is rare because you can hear the audio. So obviously the main is working at least 90%. The second thing that can happen is the screen will light for a split second then go black. This usually means that you have a bad lamp. These lamps are physically locate inside the LCD panel, and the replacement cost exceeds the price of a new unit. You may even see a dark area in the screen. The slight glow will not be uniformly lit through out the screen. Finally the last thing you may see is the screen has a slight glow. This means the back-lights work, but the video portion isn't showing. This usually means the driver board (T-con) has failed. This is probably not available separately, so you must replace the panel to fix it. And like before, the replacement cost exceeds the price of a new unit. One more thing to do when the set is on and in the very dark room if the screen is black, point a very intense flashlight into the screen. Put the flashlight against the lcd screen and see that you have video moving around the glow of the flashlight.

I have a 2006 Thomson/RCA ModelM50WH72S TV that we have replaced the lamp, it still does not work and a technician has told us that we need a light engine for it. How can we locate one?

have the same tv,, power light blinks, book said it was bulb, bulb didnt fix it,took it to tv repair shop, they found a bad capacitor, replaced it with a higher heat range capacitor, this capacitor was on the power board for the lamp circuit, repair was $200, not bad since i paid $1500 for the tv, other than that issue, just replaced a couple of lamps

JVC DLP MOD#HD55G466 what is the voltage from power supply to ballast and into the lamp.I have no voltage to the lamp could it be ballast?

Ballast board gets voltage from power supply connector CN90BL and volts readings are as follows:
Pin-1 = 380V DC
Pin-2 = Ground
Pin-3 = 15V DC
and output of ballast board would be 12,000 volts AC that goes to lamp to generate spark in its electrodes to produce high bright light.

If you get volts on input of ballast board but still lamp does not fire up then ballast board is not working.
Ballast board part number is QAL0765-001 and available with for $125
Hope these info will help you.

I have a hitachi 60vs810, powers up,bulb new and working, all fans work but no picture or sound, can almost see the menu. any help would be great, thanks

Hi,It sounds like it could be the ballast. The ballast is the board that powers the lamp. The ballast is the one that lets you know if lamp is not responding or if it's not able to power the lamp. This is the most common failure it's symptoms are exactly like the lamp it will, flicker, not turn on at all,get lamp indicator, usually you will hear clicking or attempts to light up the lamp. The ballast is a simple fix and cost less than the price of the lamp,it's usually sitted right next to the lamp.I have a video for a samsung on how to replace it ,it's the same procedure: Found the one you need here: Have a bless one!

I strongly believe that one of two things has happened:
1) the back light 'florescent tubes' lamp ballast power supply board has gone out.
2) One of the florescent tubes has failed taking out the lamp ballast.
Is the TV still under it's factory warranty?
If it is not I would call around some TV service providers in your area and get some estimates of repair. Fairly common item to go out.

Dark picture!

The Lamp it self, the Ballast, or the Power Supply that powers the Ballast. Even a combination of the Lamp and Power Supply is a common problem. If you have not replaced the Lamp since you have owned the set I would replace that first. The Lamp has about a 3000 to 5000 hour life span.
Hope this helps,

Assuming that the replacement lamp is good, you could be looking at a bad ballast (lamp power supply) or the switch on the lamp door itself could be causing the issue. The light engine also could cause an issue like that. I would have a technician look at it as this is beyond consumer repair.
