FORMAT HARDDRIVE I am having problem formatting my harddrive with restore cd. I want to reinstall the same applications that came with the laptop, how can i do this? I have tried what the manual said, but no joy. (ie.. put cd in drive, press start hold down the letter "c".. and wait for the emblem 'TOSHIBA'.) Instead it goes to windows. I check the BOIS to confirm boot phase. HELP PLEASE.

Make sure you have unplugged any network cables and removed any USB drives first. I have seen the ESC key decide how it boots too. Look for what the BIOS tells you itself as it boots.( bootom of screen just after you turn it on)

If you have tried the first solution and it didn't work, you will need to check if the hard drive is physically good. Restore won't work on a damaged hard drive. Get it tested first at a computer repair shop and then you can continue from there. You need to know first if you're restoring to a good hard drive. Hope this helps.

Have you checked that the first boot device setting in BIOS is set to CDROM? When attempting to boot from a CDROM drive you need to watch the screen for the message "Press any key to boot from CDROM" If you miss that, and you have only seconds in which to respond, then it will attempt to boot from the hard disk. I have an old laptop that partition and hd have been reformatted. I've tried using boot disk but keep getting the message that says, ''save to disk partition not found. So, can't get win98se to load as...

Haven't used win98 for a while so bear with me and this uses DOS COMMANDS too.
If useing restore cd/floppy you have to use a utility from compaq that creates two partitions on hard-drive.
They may have a restore floppy if you need it too.
One for "recovery files" and one for "OS Boot"
AHH, the memories, I still have my 95/98/ME Laptops up and running for older stuff. HP n CQ too.
Restore CD should do it all though.
If no restore CD - have Win98 CD?
if Harddrive partitioned and formated - Just do 1
1. boot from Win98 CD.
Partition n Format
2. Choose boot to DOS (puts u in virtual drive A)
3. Type drive letter of CD ( C: D: or E: )
4. Type CD Win98
5. Type Fdisk ( to partion drive)
reboot n do 1 + 2
6. Type format C: ( I do this to ckeck drive for errors)
JUST Boot from CD and follow install instructions.
1 to 6 for if you have problem with Win98 CD setting up Harddrive.

How to master reset my advent laptop

Restart your laptop. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.

In Windows by clicking: Start > All Programs > System Recovery > System Recovery.

The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.

To access the recovery options, that erases all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.

System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.

System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.
Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

My Gateway computer will not boot up. I

If you have tried to restore from the restore disks, do you know if it formatted the hard drive yet or not?

Once the format begins and you find that there is an error on the discs (can't read or whatever) then the next step is to either do a clean format or order a new set of discs from the mfg and restore from those.

They are not terribly expensive, but you will have all the drivers already on the restore as opposed to a clean install.

Good luck

God Bless

After formatting the hard drive and driver and program installation the laptop does not power anymore

How did you format your harddrive?
Did you use the Restoration CD, or use a full installation CD?

If you formatted without using one of these, you WIPED your harddrive CLEAN.

NO Operating System. NO Programs. NO personal information. NADA!

Suggest you go online to the laptop manufacturers website, and Support. Find the Contact Us. Call them and ask how to obtain the
Restoration CD. (Restoration Disk)

When you get it, do a REPAIR, not a Fresh Install.

View fies in my hardisk when windows does not load

Well it sounds like you are booting with the cd however it's your harddrive that's having a issue.
Go into the bios and check to see if your computer see's a hard drive.
If you can't do that put the laptop against your ear and listen to see if you hear the harddrive spin up.
Either way you do not have access to c:\
The harddrive either died or someone might have dropped it or jarred it and somehow it came unplugged depending on the laptop or notebook you have.

Cannot reinstall Window XP

Your harddrive shouldn't have taken a long time to format during the Windows setup procedure, the format operation carried out during setup is a very simple format and doesn't normally take long.
If you know the make of harddrive fitted to your machine, go to the manufacturers website and download the diagnostic tools for your harddrive.
If you don't know the make of harddrive then Hitachi's "Drive Fitness Test" is a good all round diagnostic tool for all makes of harddrive.
Whichever tool you use the best way to run it is from a bootable CD, so you will need to download the tool to a computer with a CD burner. The diagnostic tools are run in a virtual DOS environment created by the CD when you start your compter up with the CD in the CD tray.
You can download the Hitachi tester and read the instructions here:
Please come back and let me know the test results.
