Wiring Hunter Thermostat to 6 wire Carrier fa4bnf036

I am trying to wire a new programmable automatic thermostat to my system and found it to have 6 wires when I pulled the old thermostat off. I cannot find the wiring diagram for my system and have not been able to figure it out on my own. Is there a way to wire it so that it works or will this thermostat not work? If this thermostat won't work, where can I get one that will work and will automatically switch from ac to heat?

You probably purchased a 4 wire thermostat which we call heat/cool you stated you have 6 wires which signifies a heat pump you have to purcahase a heat pump thermostat and then write down the color of the wires to there related spots example...yellowe-y red-r white- w and so forth also before you do this kill the power the voltage typical for residential is only 24v's but if the wires touch you could blow a fuse

Is this a heat pump? Look in the thermostat. You should have something like the following.
Red wire to R terminal
Green wire to G terminal
Yellow wire to Y terminal
White wire to W or W1
Blue or Orange wire to the O or B terminal
Brown wire to C terminal.

Let me know what you have in the thermostat. The wire colors are not always the same.

Carrier OEM to Honeywell Programmable Tstat - NEED HELP

you likely have a "two stage" system, but not a two stage heat pump. the first stage is probably the heat pump itself, and the second stage is the auxilliary resistance heat that suppliments the heat pump at lower temps. if i knew the terminals that are available on the new stat, i could advise you on the proper wiring.

Trying to replace my old t-stat to a Hunter 44260 t-stat, the old wirings are :Rc-Rh(jumpered), G,Y,W, O & B and the new t-stat has G,Rc,Rh,Y/O,W/B & Y1, i dont know where to connect the old wiring...

It sounds like a standard gas fired heating system and electric cooling. Leave the jumper between the RC and RH and attach the red wire.to one of them it does not matter since they are jumped. Attach green to G attach the white to W attach the yellow to Y if there is no C screw on the new thermostat leave the blue wire disconnected and not touching anything. It is the common and many systems use feedback to provide the common power. The O & B terminals are used for heat-pump systems only. Their purpose is for the reversing valve. Depending on the make or model either the O or B is used not both but remember the O & B are for heat-pumps only not gas fired furnaces. NOTE the best wiring practice is strip the wire with your thumb nail not wire strippers they tend to leave nicks in the wire and will break in the future also wrap the wire around the screw in a clockwise direction it will pull the wire into the connection tightly if you wrap the wire counterclockwise it will push the wire away from the connection. Good luck. I assume the new thermostat is digital. If it is not digital the heat anticipator must be set. If that is the case let me know and I'll give you instructions on how to set it.

You may and an anolog stat and the old one was digital if so it won't work. Digital sends info to system anolog is just a set of points open or closed. Digital can carry tons of info to system like a computer. Like comparing a computer to a rock. Sorry but you need to go back to proper type stat.
