Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Not drying Ive already taken off the front and started the dryer. The ignitor glows red and lights the gas. Then it all goes out after about 45 seconds.

Ive already checked all vent pipes and all are clear. After watching the dryer run with the front off, the gas shuts off, then the ignitor trys to light it again. Afte talking to a service tech he said it was a gas valve contol located on the top of the gas valve. He talked as if it were a comon problem. I located one at a repair shop for under $20.00. I took the old one off that was held in place by 2 screws and 2 wire bundles.

May Tag Gas Dryer Model MDG3000AWW - Dry works but no heat, more dry/ less dry lights flashing. Whats wrong? How do I get heat again?

it is either your glow coil or it is your ignitor
open the door and remove the four screws
take the front panel off.
leave the door attached so you can test the dryer
be very careful not to touch any wires while you are doing this
now close the door and turn the dryer on
does the ignitor turn on?
if yes that is good
does the ignitor glow and no flame?
sometimes it will take a minute to show it's problem
if the ignitor glows and no flame replace your ignitor coils
make sure to turn the power off when replaceing the coils

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

If the drying problem is with the gas coils, is

Hi. On the gas valve are one or two coils (solenoids) used to open and close the valve to control the flow of gas. If a coil fails, gas will not flow and the dryer will have no heat.

The easiest way to diagnose a problem in the burner assembly is to observe the burner operation. Remove the small access panel at the bottom, front of the dryer, select a high temperature setting and start the appliance. Watch the burner assembly, shortly after starting the dryer the ignitor should begin to glow. Next you should hear the click of the gas valve coil and a flame should ignite. The flame should be mostly blue and it should remain on for a minute or more.

If the ignitor glows for several seconds (up to 15 seconds) and then goes out, the problem is probably the coils (solenoids). If the ignitor glows and stays on, then the problem is usually the flame sensor. If it ignites and then quickly goes out, it is most likely a problem with inadequate air flow.Test the coil for resistance using a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting X10. Place a probe on each terminal. The multimeter should change from a reading of infinity to roughly 1300 ohms (+/- 150 ohms) when the probes touch the terminals. If the reading is infinity or substantially different from 1300 ohms, the solenoid should be replaced.

  • NOTE_ If the ignitor doesn't glow at all, it must be replaced. This type of repair is affordable, but i can not recommend to do it yourself if you are not qualified. This type of repair can be dangerous, due to the exposure of flammable gases and electrical devices. You must shut off all incoming gas feeds, and electrical currents before preceding with the inspection and repair, as well.

Roper dryer not heating/drying but still rotates drum.

If electric then the thermostat or the heating element has failed.
If gas: First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it) It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off. If the ignitor does not glow then it or the thermostat is bad. If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the flame sensor may have to be replaced. If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

Dryer doesnt blow hot air.

I find that quite often the ignitor is out of alignment or the glass window is covered with lint.
a gas dryer blows air through a burner assembly to heat the air. The burner assembly consists essentially of a gas valve, ignitor and a flame sensor. If any part of the burner assembly malfunctions, the result will be low or no heat and slow drying of the clothes.
There are two common styles of ignitors, glow ignitors and spark ignitors. The ignitor ignites the gas either by heating up and glowing, or by sparking. If the ignitor fails, the dryer will not heat.

The easiest way to check the ignitor is to observe it. Remove the small access panel in front, select a high temperature setting and start the dryer. Watch the burner assembly, shortly after starting the dryer the ignitor should begin to glow or spark. If you see it glow or spark, then the ignitor is working.

How do you light pilot light?

Dryer does not have pilot light.  There is an ignitor that glows when the dryer is started and lights the flame when the gas begins to flow.  With the front of the dryer off start it up and look for the glow. when it glows hot enough (or on a newer model it might be a spark) the gas should ignite.  When the flame sensor sees that the gas is ignited it shuts off the ignitor and keeps the gas valve open until the temperature sensor gets high and shuts it off.  When the temp sensor cools down the cycle repeats.
If no glow or spark-->bad ignitor If no gas flow-->bad flame sensor or bad gas valve coil If gas comes on and goes off quickly-->lint filter and/or vent pipe or outlet may be clogged or bad flame sensor.

Stops heatinng

Hi, first thing to check is the venting. If the vent is plugged, it will cause the heat to short cycle.
If later in the cycle, the ignitor glows but will not ignite the gas, you will need to change the coils on top the gas valve. This is a common problem.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

The problem is the dryer was taking too long to dry. Ive taken off the front and started the dryer, the heating element glows red ang ignites the gas, then goes out after about 45 seconds. The ignitor and...

If you run the dryer with the front off, the air is sucked in the open front and out the vent. The combustion air (and heat) is not drawn away from the burner, which causes the burner to short cycle. You may also have this same condition with the front on if you have a poor vent. Don't use any flexible venting. Use rigid aluminum pipe and adjustable elbows if needed. Clean the vent out and make sure the outside vent is clean and air flows out the vent with a strong flow. The outside vent should be a 4 inch vent, not a 2 inch vent flap. That normally will solve your problem. Rarely, a gas valve may cause these symptoms, but make sure the vent is good first.
