Philips 8801 Drive Has Disappeared

I have a Dell Dimension 3100 whose DVD+RW DVD shows up in the device manager as a Philips 8801 whose driver is corrupt or missing. If I follow the trouble shooting info and uninstall it, new hardware is found but there is a problem loading the driver and I end up with the same error message. The drive will open, close and spin but will not read or write and its icon has disappeared from the ''My Computer'' folder. I've looked at the Dell, Microsoft and Philips sites but I am slowed with only dial up available and don't see an appropriate driver for an 8801 anyway. Computer is beyond warranty. A CD of drivers did come with the unit but may only be for the monitor. I can't read it to find out. I'm waiting for a friend to read it and if it contains a usable driver to save it for me on a USB flash drive. Any suggestions while I am waiting?
Please help if you can.

Thanks for help, Dshack, but I wasn’t able to follow your
instructions exactly and still have a non-functioning drive. I uninstalled the
drive and restarted in safe mode with networking. GUI (graphical user
interface?) did not appear as an option. While the computer was booting, plug
and play had already started reinstalling the drive and the first window that
opened presented me with only one choice which was to “finish” the
installation. It came with the message that there was a problem with the
software. When I opened the system folder and went to the restore tab, “save”
did not appear as an option so I ended the fix at that point. I had previously
restored my computer to the earliest restore point that I could reach but not
in safe mode and that didn’t work.

I followed the “model” link and it took me to the Dell
drivers location. Problem is that I can’t find my drive listed there. Even when
I enter my service tag number, it only refines the choices but doesn’t list
mine. I had previously downloaded a couple of the drivers but none worked. I
had seen on a discussion board that my drive was the same as a Benq 1650. I
downloaded a driver from that site but it didn’t work.

When I went into the properties through the Device Manager
this is what I found. There was this
instance id but no hardware ids. I found this but have no idea what it means or
    what to do with it.

The only other thing I’ve tried is a utilities tool in my
Dell folder. The errors it found were a disabled network card(I can only get
dial up here) and the dvd drive. When I asked for a fix it completed its work
and restarted my computer but the problem remained. I appreciate all the time
that you have given me but if you have anything else that I might try, I’d be
grateful. Please don’t get too technical. My skills are modest.

Try this:

Uninstall the hardware in the device manager.

Restart and go into safe mode with GUI and networking.

Go into Control panel -> (Performance&Maintenance) System -> System Restore tab.

Save a restore point.

Go back to the last restore point.

Restart PC.

*If anywhere in the System panel you see a Dell restore/repair or Dell backup/revert icon, info, etc, that would be the way to go. Dell ought to have its own system self-repair buried somewhere on the harddrive that should be accessable through the control panel, start/programs menu, or in the boot/safe mode logon process.

Please reply if this does not help and I will continue to assist you.

Also, apparently your dell has had some other issues that may be interfering with your dvd drive.

Please head to the model's page for drivers and firmware updates, specifically the Chipset driver, and restart the computer.

Yet again, also, please go into the device manager and find the DVD drive, right click and go into properties, into the Details tab.

Check the Device Instance ID and the Hardware ID, and report back what it says. such as thus:

It seems you may have an aftermarket dvd drive. Did you buy this computer from Dell with their default equipment, or did you specify a different drive?

If you bought it from Dell and made no specific requests, it may be that they swapped a drive for the default drive.

What you wanted was not a driver for the dvd drive, but for the Chipset. Your motherboard may not recognize the drive properly, thus your chipset would need to be updated.

Can't get Dell Desktop to recognize cd/dvd on D: drive

With any computer this is a question that must be answered by those that provide the driver software. Like the number above (Dimension 3100) you should begin your search here=> Dimension 3100 Drivers that is if you have not altered the driver by putting a different player in the slot. What you need to do is test the drive using the Dell diagnostics. The procedure can be found in the CD/DVD FAQ. Run the "read test". You'll need to insert various disc types during the test. This came from Dell Forums. Click Here=> Dell Forums/Osprey and Here=> Search Results for "Dimension 3100 DVD Driver"
Hope this helps, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Driver for dvd-r 8801 need a driver for dvd player windows won't recognise it

The drivers for DVD ROM drives are built into Windows and there is no download.

If Windows does not recognize th drive then it could be a hardware issue or possibly a BIOS setting is wrong.

Does the Windows Device Manager show an un-recognized device?

Hello, i use an acer laptop,i have the philips DVD + RW drive in the laptop.but now for the past few days it has just disappeared,it does not show in my computer but it is still there in computer mana

The device may be disabled or is in conflect with something else. I would recommend to have the drivers uninstalled and reinstalled other wise reformat your hard drive. FFR (Full Format Restoration) don't forget to back up.
