LCD goes black as if the laptop lid was closed. Button is in the up position but screen goes dark. If I press and release the plastic button that shuts down the monitor when the lid is closed, the screen is viewable for a bit, then cuts out again.
In the absence of any flickering, I think it is the inverter for the backlight that has developed a heat problem.
Experiment with this; tilt the laptop, raising it in the rear with anything that does not appreciably block air flow, then use a fan placed behind it aimed at the underside of the case.
If the time before death (blackout) is extended, then it is as described above. If it makes no difference, then it is likely only the fluorescent backlight lamp itself.
