Question about Apple iMac 24" Desktop

1 Answer

I have an Imac 24" 2.8 ghz. I run windows xp sp3.0 on it.

When I am in the pc mode and I open Pal Talk to have a discussion with some friends, the isight works (but a bit dark) but the voice communications does not work - my speech come out low and grabled. Is there something that I can do to correct this so that I can use my internal mike???

Thanks

Hi Sean - your right this is my first time owning a mac computer.  I am using XP home edition service pack 3, and prior to installing it I did upgrade bootcamp  to 2.1 as you asked.  I have to agree that it is a hardware issue but as you probably know the Imac does not let you in or change the sound settings or the isight internal cam - or at least I don't know how to change them.

That is where I am at now.  Thank you for returning my e-mail I appreciate it.

Sean - Sorry that it has taken me a few days to reply - I have to travel for a living.  I clicked the gray speaker icon and opened up the mixer controls.  When I look at Mic - at the top of the vertical slide bar - it is NOT highlighted - it is a ghost.  I am able to work with all the other bars as you described, however after selecting different hardware (of which there are only 2 that will allow me to enable the settings - neither of them of which allow me to use the internal mic or to use an external mic on Paltalk.  I can hear every well but my mic output is garbled and a very very low volume.

    Hi Nashgrandpa,

I don't use Pal Talk but I am guessing this is a hardware issue anyway. So you're using XP in bootcamp rather than Parallels and the internal mic comes out weird. Are you using the latest 2.1 drivers? These sorted out a heap of hardware issues. You can get it from here. Try that first and we'll take it from there...

    All the best

Hi again. Sorry it's been a while for me to get back to you. Work!

In windows, on the bottom right there is a red speaker icon. Double click it. In the window that appears click the tab labeled 'Mixer' There you can choose the input source - Line, Mic, etc - Choose Mic by clicking the little dot to the bottom right of the fader. Now set the input volume of the mic to about 1 (if the scale was 1 to 10). That should be about right but you can leave it up and adjust to suit.

The video settings you can only adjust using whatever software is using it.

There's loads more you can do with your audio from that mixer controller. I'd recommend just playing with it to find out what you can do. Have a play, you're not gonna do any permanent damage.

All the best

Sean

MA878LL iMac 24" core 2 duo 2.4 do not turn on,

Checking the power supply isn't the easiest thing to do, it involves pulling apart the entire machine.
You can try resetting the SMC, unplugging all power, hold the power button for 5 seconds, replace power, then attempt to turn on.
if it still won't turn on, and assuming you didn't get AppleCare or it is expired (past 3 years) it might be worth taking in to an Authorized Apple Repair Facility and see if they will check it out for free. If it is under warranty, most definitely take it in or call 1-800-APL-CARE
If neither of those are an option, Power Supply http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/iMac-Intel-24-Inch-2-4-2-8-GHz-or-3-06-EMC-No-2211-GHz-Power-Supply/IF169-002
a tear down from iFixit for the 20" model, it is most likely very similar for your model as well http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2133-and-2210-Power-Supply/1006/1
Hopefully that helps. Good Luck

This is a question from a friend of mine who recently was given a used imac. Any ideas what he can try doing? when I plug it in and turn it on I get a grey screen with a little icon in the middle (looks...

What your friend is seeing, is an indicator that the Mac 333 Mhz, is not able to boot up to recognizable Mac OS volume. This means that Mac OS volume is either damaged or has some how been corrupted.

Apple advises the only fixes for such an issue with this class of their "legacy computer" series is to back up the data on the hard drive if possible and reinstall the Mac OS version is was operating with, or simply go a step further and upgrade to the highest version of the Mac OS X family of operating systems, that this iMac G3 qualifies for.

Here is a link from Apple support for resolving this issue for this legacy mode;
Macintosh starts up to Grey Screen

If your friend is interested in knowing what is the highest version of Mac OS X he can install on his iMac 333,, it would be Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

This version is the highest upgrade for the iMac 333 because Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger will only work with Macs that have a built-in Firewire port.

Here is the technical specifications link from Apple for this model:
Technical Specifications - iMac 333 Ghz (1999)

This should help.

My iMac G5 1.8 GHz 2GB ram computer desktop

Hello
If you can run it in safe mode, that means that you have an extension problem. I had most of the time problems with the ATI extensions.
First of all try too boot on another account, an new one would be good, to check if this is not account related.
Secondly i would reinstall the system (a clean install would be good, tough you can try an archive-install)
Thirdly if it isnt fixed I would delete all ATI extensions instead of the one that your graphic card uses. to delete: go to /System/Library/Extensions .
Hope that helps

Need assistance transferring video to imac

The Panasonic PV-GS12 will transfer video in video record mode and video playback mode using the DV connection (IEEE) Firewire port. PC Mode is restricted to memory card access via USB. If after connecting it in this manner if it does not work try this. With everything connected via firewire and iMovie running. switch the camera to PC mode and the import window should pop up. You may get a comunications error and if you do then switch to playback mode. The import window should stay open and you can control your camera with the iMovie controls.

2.4 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo DVDRW/CD-RW Desktop has Cd stuck

Hi, Sorry to hear you are having problems,
So, tell me is this a 17”, a 20” or a 24” iMac?
Have you ever opened or had this iMac opened by a technician ? If so, they may not have put it back together properly.
If not, this sounds like you might have to get in there and re-seat the optical drive.
are you handy and courageous or do you want to have someone else take care of it.
I should not be an expensive repair, no parts necessary, Apple service center should take care of this for about $150
Otherwise, take a look at this and maybe try it yourself:
http://www.kodawarisan.com/index.html
Now I know, it's a Korean website, in Korean, but the list on the right hand side, has the take apart information you need.
Good luck

IMAC Downloads

I think you're trying to put windows programs on a apple mac. It won't work directly. If the program is .exe it's windows only. I think this is the case here.
